Hightown

Built as a northern stronghold for the empire of Akoom, Hightown is built on a large hill in the curve of a river. The city was built to keep watch over the gap into the North Zezhuanth desert. It would be used as a staging point to attack the borderlands throughout history.

history

Watch fort

The original construction was built at the very top of the hill. Just a large tower and barracks at first, the turbulence of the borderlands quickly had it grow to a proper motte and bailey around the starting tower. The small bailey allowed for the families of those stationed there to live, allowing for longer tours.

Capitals of the North

The town continued to grow steadily throughout the Rivell crusades and consideration years that it was a town with a quarter on the other side of the river. The city had thick walls with the original Motte and bailey having become a proper castle high above the rest of the city. The two fortified bridges crossed the river connecting the two sides of the city. When Yulgrick Rubyborn reorganized the empire as he expanded north from the blessed plains. He put everything north of the Dragon-Teeth mountains under the control of a single Fylkir. The first Falkir choose Hightown as his base of operations, using it to supply the northern crusades and as a shield against counterattacks. This led to more trade passing through the city and more jobs. Growing it to rival even the silent lake city-states. Even after Imp moved the northern capital, most northern trade routes came through Hightown before moving onwards to Vragh Akoom.

Rivell rebellion and true prophets

As the Empire fractured with rebellion, Hightown started off loyal, defending the northern border. As the Demon Prophet's policies became more brutal, however, Falkir Quortz decided some demons had corrupted the council to elect such an unholy cur. Declaring himself the true prophet within Hightown he rallied the north around him. This attempt couldn't save the empire though and the small kingdom of Akoom Milambak formed between the desert and Hightown. With the Imp's death and the council in disarray, no one questioned the new circumstance, with the seat of power for the followers of Akoom moving to Hightown. This continued for a little over 100 years till Urmgrom Broodhorn moved the seat back to Akoomtet.

Golden age of Peace

Hightown's position allowed it to navigate the next two ages quietly, making a supply deal with Stormhold up in the mountains, Hightown continued to produce some of the most devoted, loyal, and protective paladins. Hightown prospered in this period, becoming the jewel of the north and what a true city of Akoom should be. Throughout this period its ruler maintained the rank of Fylkir and was appointed by the prophet.

Crisis of the Fey age

With war breaking out again in the north as hordes of undead moved south, Hightown moved into a war stance once again, as supplies and paladins flooded north through its gates. Magical detonators have been placed on its newer, nonfortified bridges and supplies are being stockpiled. The prophet's flag once again flies above the castle and Hightown is once again ready to protect the pass into the desert. A readiness that would be tested.   In 31 Zabar, 122 Fey, Vörös attacked the city directly, having his necromancers open arcane gates all over the city, it was quickly overrun as the various armies scrambled to its defense. The battle would only last five minutes however as Grunkle's Angels defended the gate against the Revenant and Vörös, seemingly killing both. The city itself was heavily damaged, with hundreds dead.

layout

The city is separated into several wards, with a wall around the entire city, oldtown, and the castle itself.

Castle of the Fylkir

The center of the southern bank, atop a large hill. This fortress is the location of the original tower, now multi-walled, towered, and fully equipped to withstand and even repel a siege. the north lookout tower commands a view from the mountains in the east to the lake in the west. This is both the residences of the Fylkir and the military home of the paladins.

oldtown

The walled town immediately around the hill is the oldest part of the city itself. The two fortified bridges also connect to this area, though the double gatehouse and drawbridge on the south of the bridge make it no easy access. Oldtown also holds the main administrative buildings and the temple of Akoom.

Northward

Probably the poorest district of the city, Northward is mostly home to unskilled workers and their families. A large market sits in the middle to provide for the ward itself. While poor the northward is still better off than several comparable areas in other cities, being made of brick and stone rather than wood and mud.

Docks

The only area that spans both sides of the river and has several easily destroyed bridges to accommodate travel between. The north area is just several fisheries, ports, and one or two warehouses while the south has the larger port and plenty of storage space.

Westward

This ward on the south just behind the river is where the majority of the city's workshops and industry are. Craftsmen's houses are built on top of the workshop creating a taller part of the city than other areas.

Southward

Positioned south of Oldtown, southward is the location of the city's nobility, almost exclusively long-standing paladin families, the area is dotted with small keeps, each designed to hold its own and bleed an invader dry taking each estate.

Newtown

To the south behind the docks and westward is Newtown. This houses a mix of new merchant mansions and new-style townhouses. Built around parks with shops around the edge, many of the older families in the city look at this ward with disgust, saying it fails in the city's duty.
