Gortmunin Whales Species in Turien | World Anvil

Gortmunin Whales

Apparently, Elder Jazzach didn't realise that I was the one who yearly gave coordinates to the Egguard Unit for finding Gortmunin whales.
She asked me how I knew where they were... I have a Naiad friend who knows how to read the correct currents to find them. What type of Naiad? A Lotus. Yeah, it doesn't make sense for a lotus to know the currents of the Ocean, but she was always a flakey one, she was.

Gortmunin Whales

These are one of the largest whale species in the Ocean. As such, they require no less than an entire Egguard Unit to bring one down. They generally stick to themselves, partially hidden within the waves of the outer Ocean bands.
Thus, they are hard to find, unless you know exactly where they are. Even the coordinates I get are often a little delayed so the Egguad Unit still have to look around for a bit. Still, close is pretty good. Once you get that close, anyways, as they are only half hidden it is possible to find them from there.
They are very strong and very large. The ones that come to the Starise Event are often the little ones, so more meat is able to be harvested at that time. And by little I mean the newly adulted ones. The babies stay back with their oversized grandparents. I don't actually know their family relations, but close enough.

A Visit

As I am looking for Guardians, I asked my Lotus Naiad friend where the Gortumin whales are. She knew where they were last week, so we went there. The brooch had a pull towards a certain current once there, so we followed that for a few hours and then found some young ones. As there were only three of us, and only one with a weapon, the whales just yelped and swam back to their herd. We followed.
Ah... I didn't know there were this many whales. Of any species, but particularly not Gortmunin.
We were able to swim through the herd. I only got distracted a number of times. ... only lightly more times than Elder Jazzach got mad at me.
Their place is almost like a field. But in the Ocean. Not the floor bed either, but floating around somewhere in the Ocean. Pinks and greens make up mini currents and various algae and other sea plants float in those currents.
Feels like a second home. Except it would make me way too hungry.

Ex-Guardians

We made our way through the herd and came to the largest two whales I have ever seen. Even bigger than the sea monsters I had seen before. They kind of look like sea monsters, too, except they are shaded dark greys, not quite the black silhouette of sea monsters.
We just kinda stared for a while.
  An interpreter didn't come either.
But one of them picked up a pink current and started to wrap it around its fins. Have you ever seen a Human with two broken arms try to fold a sheet? It was as awkward as that. We watched as the wrapping became a compass.
And then it started pointing everywhere.
Then the other giant whale came from behind the first and wrapped a really dark blue current around the face of the first. They floated downwards as the bit of current between the first whale and the compass was broken. The death play between them stopped as the compass drifted away, and the whales came back to where they were. But the first showed under one of its fins and it was black. Same black as sea monsters.
The two whales then held their fins and put their heads towards each other. The currents picked up and we were kicked out.
  I think they are dying.
But, trying to protect their herd?
