Vault of the Successor
This converted tomb was a storehouse for dangerous magic items.
Architecture
Above ground was a small fortress, meant to protect the entrance to the tomb and to provide the heirs with a safe space to rest during their stay. A 7ft stone wall surrounded several towers and other buildings, more to keep animals out than in expectation of being useful for keeping out attackers.
The underground structure supposedly had four paths down to the actual vault. These were known as the paths of the:
King.
Pilgrim.
Counsellor.
Champion.
Each path is believed to have had different traps to deter thieves and to test those who wish to make use of one of the objects stored here.
The assorted paths were sometimes used to dispose of inconvenient people, with their disappearances blamed on them having proved unworthy of the vault's treasures
History
First constructed as a tomb for a warrior king as a way to appease his subjects after he was poisoned, this was a place of pilgrimage for several generations of rulers. Each of those rules was also entombed here along with any dangerous objects discovered during their reign buried along with them.
Heirs to the lands rulers were meant to visit the tomb to learn of the nation's history and the objects stored there. Each of the magical artefacts was useful but dangerous and part of the lesson was learning about how and when such treasures should be used.
While not a secret the location of this structure wasn’t widely known outside of the court of those who ruled this area. It became much less widely known when the region was conquered by Balri. The leaders of that oft paranoid nation suppressed the location to such an extend that when the country experienced once of its periodic revolutions the location was lost entirely.
