Ruin Guide Profession in Tremanac | World Anvil

Ruin Guide

Someone who helps treasure seekers reach remote ruins either because they know the area or because they are skilled in finding food and avoiding danger.

Perception

Demographics

When first formed Ruin Guides were about 50% halfling, 30% gnome, and 20$ elf. By the time LECTs was outlawed it had shifted to 35% halfling, 25% gnome, 30% elf, and 10% other.   When ruin guides started being authorised by the elven lands around 85% of guides were elves, 5% halflings, and 10% gnomes.

History

Mention of these guides was first recorded during The Second Age when a period of relative peace allowed those who enjoy travelling and exploring to come together to form LECTs. It took little time for militaries throughout The Alliance to realise that this group contained those with the skill to be talented scouts. Some members of LECTs were somewhat forcibly recruited and the remaining members appealed to the Colleges of Magic for help.   The wizards agreed to help in exchange for commitments from LECTs that they wouldn't take sides in conflicts or accept jobs from military groups. The members of LECTs accepted these conditions and created a code that their guides would follow, This won them few friends, and rather than being allowed access to different countries as neutral parties the members of LECTs instead found themselves banned from their homelands. Despite the lack of access to the more developed towns the ruin guides of LECTs were able to make a reasonable living along the borders of the Alliance.   Following the Days of the One LECTs was officially outlawed due to it's members refusing to help the heroes who brought an end to that terrible time. The guides stubborn refusal of aid was seen as aiding Oliver so even the leaders of the Colleges wouldn't step in to help this time.   A new association was created a few centuries later under the control of the Ancient Kingdom of the Forest. This new organisation claimed to follow the same ideals as LECTs, but with a more practical outlook when it came to civilisation ending events. In addition to authorising ruin guides it also maintained supply posts along the edges of the civilised world, which the guides were only too happy to send travellers to to purchase essential supplies.

Operations

Tools

Every guide's pack will contain slightly different equipment depending on the sort of area they specialise in. Regardless of what the gear is, it will invariably be of the highest quality the guide can afford. Many have magical items they received as payment from a group of adventurers or that they acquired from a ruin themselves.

Provided Services

Guides can be hired for a variety of purposes but some of the more common are:
  • Finding a route to a particular set of ruins based on scant information.
  • Taking a group through a remote area where either the lack of supplies or dangerous conditions would otherwise ensure the group's deaths.
  • Finding a safe route through a poorly explored area to allow for trade between isolated settlements.
LECTs
While many claim to be guides only those authorised by the League of Explorers, Cartographers, and Travellers can be called true Ruin Guides. These explorers do not just share skill. They also share the same philosophy about the best way to traverse the world.
  • Dangers are to be avoided not fought.
  • We are the trespassers, it is on us to not antagonise the locals.
  • If the beast attacks a village you can kill it. If you stray into it's territory you can defend yourself. But there's no way I'm helping you hunt a creature that is just minding it's own business.
