Island in the Storm Myth in Tremanac | World Anvil

Island in the Storm

For centuries mariners have talked about an island that lies in the middle of a storm that rages constantly off the north coast of Dalthion. The island is sighted only briefly through the rain that blankets the area and no-one is known to have reached (or returned from) the island.

Summary

We all know the storm that never stops. The rain that constantly falls and the gale that blows without end. But if you watch it long enough it will see that there are quieter periods. when the rain eases and the faintest light shines through. At those times if you look carefully enough you can just make out Saralire Island.
For many a new sailor in northern Dalthion the first story they hear on joining a crew is that of Saralire Island. Sitting in the middle of the Sea of the Unending Storm this island is seldom glimsed and never reached.   The island was the home of a powerful group of sorcerers who were cast ut of their own lands over fears that they would try to seize power. Banding together they sought a place where they could be free to practice using their powers. Since no land would take them they combined their magics to raise up an island out of the sea, This display of power frightened the rulers of nearby lands and a great fleet was assembled to put an end to the sorcerers' enclave.
Proof? You want proof? Over the years I've met 3 lookouts who've seen the island while on watch. Even heard tell of a captain or two who have seen it.
To protect themselves the sorcerers worked their magics to create a storm around their island which completely destroyed the fleet. With the threat of attack quelled for the moment the sorcerers allowed the storm to ease, but each time a new threat arose for the islanders the storm has reappeared to drive away or destroy any attackers. When the sorcerers fell during the years of darkness the storm went out of control and now rages constantly.
Of course I know what I'm talking about. Haven't you seen the storm out there. It never stops. How does that happen without magic being involved
The accumulated wealth and creations of the sorcerers is still on the weather-beaten island. A fortune in gold and gems, along with magical artefacts the like of which haven't been seen for centuries. Whoever can make it the island and back again will earn themselves a place in history, along with enough wealth to live in luxury for the rest of their days.   But reaching the island isn't so easy. The winds and waves push away or break apart any ship that tries to approach. The currents are unpredictible at best, seeming to defy the sea sense of the most experienced sailors. If all that wasn't enough, the giant eels that live within the storm will gleefully smash any ship that gets to close in an effort to get at the crew. Only a ship of surpassing strength and a crew of the canniest and saltiest sailors has even half a chance of reaching the island alive.

[h4}Proof is in the Eels The presence of the giant eels is frequently taken as proof of the existence of the island. As everyone knows eels spawn in the shallows and there's no sign of them doing so along the coast of the sea so they must make use of site in the middle of the storm.
Scrying
Divination magic is unable to penetrate the storm so no-one has been able to use a spell to see the island. Details about the shape or even size of the island are shrouded in mystery, with many supposed descriptions contradicting each other. The Empire of Dalthion has devoted some effort into penetrating the storm with scrying spells but so far has had no success.
Trip to the Island
For those living along the coast of the Sea of the Unending Storm the phrase "Taken a trip to the island", has come to mean that someone has met an unfortunate fate as a result of their own foolishness.

Oh, this sounds really interesting. An island that reminds me of The Mysterious Island (both the Dwane Johnson vers. and the older series I remember catching time to time as a kid). Makes me wonder if any sailors have managed to make it to the island, and have managed to set up a settlement or something. There could be a whole town or something on the island, cut off from the rest of the world by that storm.   This is a really cool myth, good job!
