Eternity Item in Tremanac | World Anvil

Eternity

One of four artefacts created by the Assistants to the Elevation this scythe was made in honour of their deity's favoured weapon.   The centre of the large blade is black which fades to silver near the edges. The colour continues to fade until it is transparatent at the edge. The blade is incredibly sharp and is rumoured to be able to cut through even magical barriers. Because the blade is transparent at the edge, more than one wielder has cut themsolves by misjudging just where the cutting edge is.   Blows from the scythe leave wounds which look like they have been left to fester for days, leaving victims in agony. The wounds will not close naturally and many of those who have survived the initial attack from this weapon later succumb to their wounds. A person slain by the scythe can be raised as a skeleton or zombie with a few seconds of their death, providing the wielder with instant reinforcements.

History

This scythe's first recorded use was in the hands of Dhurilar Shimmerbrook when he led a rare open assault by the Assistants on an outpost on the borders of Trem. Though the attack was repulsed the scythe's ability to bring slain soldiers back as undead under the wielder's command meant the outpost suffered far heavier losses than would have been expected.   The scythe next appeared 100 years later in the city of Trem when Dhurilar stalked the streets at night, slaying the unwary and sending their corpses to spread death and fear. Dhurilar wore a dark hooded robe while out on the streets and while he may have drawn inspiration for the look from his deity, it is images of Dhurilar that appear in fortune telling decks as the death card.   Following Dhurilar's arrest the scythe went missing, and didn't reemerge until 150 years later. Once again in the hands of the Assistants the scythe was reportedly used as a symbol of authority in the cult, having taken on a more ceremonial than martial role. Used to deliver the final blow to captured enemies of the cult it became more feared for it what it represented rather than just for it's destructive power.   During the third age the scythe was used by a mercenary group known as the Black Scythe. While theiir name and the presence of this weapon implied a link to the Assistants there was no definitive proof, sho although the group were watched, they were mostly able to go about their business.
