Xyan

Xyan is a small farming planet located in one of the outer sectors of the Janya Galaxy. It is considered a second-class planet and very little trade occurs between it and the rest of the galaxy. The planet is most well-known for its connection to Felicia, the Celestial of food.

Geography

Xyan is a mostly flat planet without mountains or deep valleys. Although it has no oceans, there are frequent rivers, lakes, and wetlands. Hill regions and forests are common, often acting as partitions to the main areas of the planet. Plains are by far the most common type of region and all of Xyan's towns are located in open areas for visibility.   Xyan has many towns scattered across its surface, although very few are connected by roads. Most of these towns produce their own goods and trade them with others. It is not uncommon to see fields of grain just outside these settlements, for community gardens to have a prominent place in the grid plan, or for small groups of townspeople to take frequent walks to check on fenced-in orchards. Few towns support livestock on a large scale, but individuals often raise animals like chickens and goats.

Natural Resources

Despite Xyan's wide temperature range, the planet is able to support most kinds of normal flora and fauna. Xyan's farms act as more of a supplement to the major contributors of produce like Haspanic. Being a smaller planet far away from the main sector of the galaxy makes it far from the first choice. It is known, however, that goat milk from Xyan is some of the best in the galaxy and Xyanese farmers have perfected the cultivation of tomatoes and beets, both common ingredients in stew.

History

Xyan was discovered a very long time ago, so long ago that no one truly knows when the first settlers began to build their towns and farms. The locally famous town of Dernere, one of the oldest on the planet, was likely founded around 4000 BPC, yet many larger towns claim to be even older than that. From very early on in history, many towns, especially Dernere, honored and worshipped Felicia, the Celestial of food. Farmers often offered portions of their harvest in exchange for protection from the elements.   Around 3000 BPC, a statue of Felicia was built in the center of Dernere. When interplanetary travel became more common, the statue's existence and the legends surrounding drew many tourists, historians, and scholars to Xyan to visit and appreciate the statue. Bandits and raiders became common during this time, lying in wait along the few roads that existed and taking whatever they wanted, occasionally attacking villages and farms. Tourism to Xyan has decreased significantly over the past thousand years, but the planet continues to trade with the rest of the galaxy, albeit on a very small scale.

Climate

Xyan has a wildly varying climate. Although the entire planet experiences seasons around the same time, temperatures change drastically between seasons. Winter months often drop far below freezing, while summer can climb past 100° Fahrenheit. Autumn and Spring are often more stable, but unpredictability can strike at any time. Rain is frequent on this planet, turning to snow when the temperature is below freezing and accompanied by thunder and lightning in the summer.
