Resource List

Introduction

Welcome to my resource page, it's a collection of things that I use to write and create. This list is very much alive and will change and grow as needed. Take what you need from here and leave what you don't. The main goal is for this compilation to help at least one person.

If you have any suggestions that might help improve this list please leave a comment!!

If what you are looking for isn't here, check out the #resource-links-no-chat channel on the discord.

This table appears at the end of each section
Your work is heckin' valid. So are you.
— Some poster somewhere, probably.

Marketplace

I would be remiss if I didn't mention the talented people in the #marketplace channel in the discord. This is a channel full of Anvilites with services and skills for hire, consider checking them out if you have a need. Anvilites mentioned on this list are people I have worked with personally, or who have suggested items for this list. I love this talented community.

Art Resources

This is a compilation of links to places I go to for Art. Attribution is important in the art community. Truthfully this list is also for my benefit, putting things in one spot so I never lose it is always good.

***To keep image sizes down I am now using Cloud Convert to change my .png files to .webp
DepositPhoto - Images, vectors, and videos

DepositPhoto allows you to download images with a standard or extended license agreement, which means you may distribute images as part of your work once you own them. I am personally unclear on attribution requirements. **If anyone else has a better idea on whether the artist needs to be attributed or if simply stating the image came from DepositPhoto is enough, please let me know in the comments!** Information on priceing and subscriptions can be found here. Codes for image downloads are occasionally available through AppSumo

Artbreeder - Landscapes, portaits, buildings, anime, and more.

My Arbreeder Profile, it might have useful things, who knows.

A site that generates art based on 'genes' you can alter criteria to create an AI generated piece of art. Your art is then available under creative commons, but that just means so is everyone else's. Consider crediting the creator of images not made by you.

Pricing: Free to use, $8.99/mo, $18.99/mo, $38.99/mo More information on plans is available here.

RandoScropio, Artbreeder

Inkarnate - Map making

For all your map making needs if you aren't good with drawing them by hand. You own the copyright for your maps, you just don't have claims on their assets. There is a free access version, but the assets are limited. The annual subscription to premium which gives access to all asstes is affordable.

Premium Cost: $25/year

RandoScropio, Inkarnate

ChocologicalArt - Independant artist on Fiverr

A fantastic artist to hire on Fiverr. Kept me in the loop with progress, stuck to the deadlines, and made sure that I was happy with my art.

Price: Range of prices set by the artist. (I found it affordable for what I got)

MandoMc Designs - A fellow Anvilite

MandoMc is a fellow member of the World Anvil community, and she is a digital artist specializing in maps, tabletop assets, and digital planner stickers. (I stole some of that sentence, it's in her intro...hope she doesn't mind...) She's currently doing up Love's Hammer, the blacksmith shop for my current project.

Pexels.com - Free Video Loops

As per their license, all photos and videos are free to use and credits and attributions are not necessary, but appreciated. Remember that unattributed art disqualifies articles from winning challenges and being featured. This resource was stolen out of the discord server from Oneriwien.

I would put an example here but I don't know how.

MidJourney - AI Generated Art

The only thing that limits your images is your imagination. Using keywords and prompts the MidJourney Bot on discord will generate beautiful (sometimes terrible) art pieces. The process takes some getting used to but there is a small community from WorldAnvil on a discord server dedicated to learning and perfecting image generation. A wide range of artist styles are used as prompts as well as mixing styles of totally different artists. All your images are automatically put into a personal gallery where you can download your pictures. These images can be used commercially with any teir of their subscriptions, the only exemption is if you're using the images as an employee of a company that makes more than 1M/yr USD in revenue, you will need to purchase a “Corporate” plan.

***Not all pictures turn out incredibly well and some editing may need to be done depending on the subject matter. Faces and human likenesses are some of the more difficult things to make as symmytry isn't always good, and the eyes tend to get weird.***

Beta Membership (USD): MidJourney has a free Beta group membership which gives you a limited verson (25 pictures)
Basic Membership (USD): $10/month, includes: 200 generated images, Incremental billing after limits (optional),General commercial terms, Access to member gallery
Standard Membership (USD): $30/month, includes: Unlimited personal use, everything in a Basic Membership
Corperate Membership (USD): $600/month, includes: everything in a Standard Membership, Private-by-default image generation, Enterprise commercial terms

Writing Resources

This is going to be a lot of YouTube resources, but some editing ones are here too. Mostly focusing on better construction of my writing.

Editing

ProWritingAid - Editing Resource

An editing app, which has a wide range of options to improve your grammar and structure. I use this one, almost exclusively, now. I got excited with the options that allow me to polish my writing to a more professional level, and the lifetime membership was a great option to avoid a recurring bill.

Price: Free, $20/month, $79/year, or $399/lifetime (including all updates)

Grammarly - Editing Resource

Grammarly was my go to editing aid until I got ProWritingAid. It's not perfect but it can help with small issues and everything that cleans up your writing is good. I didn't like that there was no lifetime option like with ProWritingAid, it also doesn't have the same number of features for editing, if you only get one I would recommend ProWritingAid .

Pricing: Free, $25/month, $139/year, no lifetime option.

Playlists/Channels - Writing

Alexa Donne - YouTube Channel

This channel is a full of advice on avoiding pitfalls in writing. It covers a wide range of advice including character building, world building, how to start novels, tips for under-writers, tips for over-writers, etc.

A playlist on writing tropes, how to use them effectively, subvert them, or lean into them for effect.

Videos - Writing

6 (+1) Writing Tips for Writing Better Prose - YouTube Video

A wonderful look at how to improve your prose. It really breaks down all the issues writers have when constructing prose in a way that makes it easy to understand

A reminder to use plain language and not over complicate prose.

The first lecture in Brandon Sandersons' class. It's something that I go back to constantly. It is a free university level class in writing, this is a fantastic resource.

World Building

I realized I didn't have a world building section so here it is! Thanks to TimeBender for the first item in this section and making me realize I didn't have anything here yet!

Hello Future Me - YouTube Channel (Suggested by TimeBender)

This is a great channel that breaks down world building with examples from the very best to the very worst, and how to avoid the pitfalls. The most important take away from these videos was the answering of 'why', why does this work/not work? Good channel overall.

This video features accents in the USA, and got me thinking about how accents might crop up and develop in a fantasy setting. How can that apply to interactions within a setting? Can it be used to encourage conflict? What impact do socioecconomic standings have on language and accents?

Coding

Coding resources including our own World Anvil resources. I am not a coder by nature, and CSS may not be an option for everyone, but I would love to have some resource options for people who would like to learn. Unfortunately I don't know where to look, the #css-help channel in the discord server is a fantastic place to ask questions and get started on basic functions you can easily manage on World Anvil.

A look at the basics of CSS on World Anvil and how to get started and the rules that apply to meddling with the CSS in your worlds. Again if you run into issues or have questions I've found the #css-help channel on the discord infinitely helpful and welcoming.

An indisposable resource for formatting your articles in World Anvil using the most basic coding tools available to you, and a few more advanced ones. This list would be impossible without things like the artcletoc and column tags. I keep this one pinned so I can make quick reference to it.

Hey I've actually seen some of the YouTube videos you've posted here! Don't I feel special now. XD Anyways, thanks for this list, I think it'll be rather helpful! :)

I grabbed some from the #writers channel of the discord. I should put a note somewhere to let people know I’m open to resource sharing. If there’s anything you’d personally recommend that would be awesome!

Ooh, okay! Well nice. Hello Future Me has a pretty helpful worldbuilding YouTube channel, where he discusses a large range of worldbuilding topics, and dives into the psychology of some famous characters!
