Bilight

Bilight is a series of romance novels by the Korvian named Romancer. They follow an Elven Woman named Anastaise Beaufort, an Elven Vampire nonbinary person named Cyrille Martel, a Devil named Esteem, an Evity Skeleton named Guinevere, and an Elven soldier named Baptiste.   The series consists of four books:
  1. Bilight
  2. Civil Dawn
  3. Dusk
  4. Sunlight.
Each series adds something new to the mounting romance of Anastaise Beaufort and Cyrille Martel, who were the most popular couple among the readers, while also adding conflict in other potential romantic partners. By the third book, the story begins developing not just the main romance, but also side romances between characters other than Anastaise.
Cyrille Martel and Anastaise Beaufort by Jarhed

Bilight

The first book in the series begins with Anastaise Beaufort in her home city of Camor. The first paragraph reads:
The glimmering of the golden city as the sun set made me let out a sigh. Same as yesterday and every day before it. The lace of my embroidered dress caused my skin to itch, but that wasn't the only reason. I was itching for something else. Something new to the mundane life of Anastaise Beaufort.

Baptiste by Jarhed
Anastaise meets up with her childhood friend, an Elven warrior named Baptiste. Baptiste and Anastaise reminisce their childhood, and his mother comes out and says a sly comment about the two of them looking cute together.   Baptiste laughs it off, and Anastaise's narration says:
His laughter made me question everything I had known. I didn't love him... but why did it unnerve me that he didn't want me? Was I that undesirable?
Anastaise decides to do something to get Baptiste's attention. She breaks into the local barracks, thinking to steal one of his medals, but instead finds someone else there. Not a soldier, but a mysterious nonbinary person in a scarf.   Anastaise tries to draw the attention of them, but she sees that they are distracted, standing over one of the soldiers necks, about to bite. Anastaise yells out to them, and they stop just in time to run away. Before Anastaise can catch this mysterious person, Baptiste arrives and catches her.   Baptiste questions what she was doing there, and picks up on the fact that she was there to see him. He asks her to go out for dinner, but she declines him and runs away. Her mind races thinking of the mysterious scarfed person and how she can see them again.

The Search for the Scarf

Anastaise continues breaking into various residences and government buildings. She finds in many military stations that the mysterious scarfed person is there, but they continue running no matter what Anastaise does.   Meanwhile, Baptiste corners Anastaise and asks her:
"Why do you keep running from me? I want to help you, but you just keep breaking the law and putting us further and further away." Baptiste's eyes stared into my soul as he grabbed my hand, strong yet still gentle, like the boy I'd known my whole life, and yet more like the man he had grown into, "It's like you're trying to get my attention. All this running around... why not just stay right here with me?"
Anastaise doesn't know why she had run away and kisses Baptiste. They go out on the town for a walk, but when Anastaise sees the scarfed person in the distance, she tells Baptiste to get them a table and she'll be right there.

The Meeting of Lovers

Anastaise finds the scarfed person in an empty warehouse, where all that's there are notes and letters. The scarfed person sneaks up on Anastaise, taking her by the hand and kissing it. They introduce themselves as Cyrille Martel and say that they've been watching her and that they want her help. Anastaise agrees to help, and Cyrille takes her away, leaving Baptiste to eat alone.   Anastaise and Cyrille take to the rooftops at night, infiltrating homes of high ranking officials to search for documents. Anastasia doesn't feel the desire to ask what they're looking for, as she is happy to be with them.   At one point they infiltrate Camor Keep and Cyrille throws her onto the Royal Bed of the King.
Cyrille's nails scratched my wrists as their hands wrapped around my wrists. They smiled, fangs showing from beneath their scarf as they said, "This is a bed fit for a Queen... one day, you'll be able to stay here. But tonight, I'll treat you like a Queen."
The next morning, as Anastaise questions to herself Cyrille being a vampire, she receives a letter from Baptiste. Cyrille was gone, and Baptiste had taken them away.   Baptiste asks Anastaise to meet them, and when she gets there, Baptiste explains that Cyrille is a criminal whom she has been aiding in treasonous acts. He says that she needs to renounce them, and that he can give her the happy life she wants. Anastaise refuses, exclaiming that she can't have happiness staying as she is, and that she'd rather be with Cyrille than be the Anastaise that Baptiste knew.   Baptiste sighs, letting Cyrille go and realizing that he doesn't want to hurt Anastaise or anyone that she loves. The two run off into the light of the moon that shines on their faces, together, leaving Baptiste alone once more.

Civil Dawn

The next book begins with Cyrille and Anastaise on the run with the documents Cyrille stole. They say to Anastaise that she can help them, and begin targeting more dangerous places.
Esteem by Jarhed
Anastaise eventually is injured in one of the battles, despite putting in a good effort, and Cyrille decides to leave her behind for their next stakeout. Anastaise is depressed, fearing Cyrille left her behind.   This is when a Devil named Esteem shows up. Esteem bows to Anastaise and laments the goings on in Camor.
The pink-skinned woman's horns were hidden by the forest of locks above her head. Most people wouldn't stare long enough to find them, but I found my gaze fixed to her face as she smiled, her freckles curling with the corners of her mouth as she said, "Things are awful around here... I can take you somewhere better. I can bring you to Hell."   I didn't see how Hell could possibly be better than life in the golden city. It wasn't perfect here, but I had Cyrille and Baptiste.

Considering the Offer

However, when Esteem leaves, Cyrille does not return. Anastaise believes Cyrille to be dead, and wonders whether Baptiste did it. She goes to Baptiste's boss, Ermaris, who says that Baptiste has been missing as well.   This leads Anastaise to wonder if both Cyrille and Baptiste are dead, sending her into a downward spiral as she begins wreaking havoc on the city, attacking anyone she believes to be potentially responsible, spurred on by indirect words from Ermaris.   Esteem accompanies Anastaise, helping her and making sure she doesn't take things too far. The Devil finds Anastaise at one point alone, crying. Anastaise had let one of her targets run when they expressed the desire to return home to their wives, because she thought of wanting to see Cyrille again.
"You don't need to see Cyrille again," the Devil put her finger to my lips, "I can bring you to paradise." She planted her lips on mine, her hand caressing my neck, and I melted into her arms. Her kiss was warm, like the layers of Hell had combined together to draw me in. But there was nothing I could do but go along with the words of the most beautiful woman I had ever met.

The Full Moon

Anastaise decides to bring Esteem with her to see Ermaris. Esteem is pleased to meet him, but Ermaris does not express the same feeling. Anastaise worries that something is wrong with Esteem, and wonders if her being drawn to someone mysterious again had caused her to make a bad decision.   Cyrille and Baptiste appear in the window, warning Anastaise to get away. She screams at them that she won't run from them, and that she's prepared to fight. She calls out to Esteem and Ermaris to back her up, but Cyrille shakes their head.
"I didn't mean to get away from us... I meant from him," Cyrille pointed behind me.   I heard the sound of metal and a muffled scream, and when I turned back, Esteem had a sword through her back, and Ermaris stood with a devious smile on his face. A smile that seemed to grow larger as his body grew, and before I knew it, a wolf-like face stared back at me.
Ermaris reveals himself as a werewolf and scratches Anastaise on the back. She is immobilized, but instead of going after her, Baptiste and Cyrille come to save her and Esteem, letting Ermaris get away. The book ends with Cyrille staring into Anastaise's eyes and saying he will not leave her again.

Dusk

The third book in the series begins with vivid dreams of Anastaise's early life with Baptiste. She looks back fondly on those days, which she had once called mundane, and wishes for them back.
Guinevere by Jarhed
When she wakes, she finds a strange sight. A skeleton stands over her, waiting for her to wake. The skeleton introduces herself as Guinevere, but refuses to elaborate further on anything about herself.   Guinevere tells Anastaise that she can help her deal with being dead, but Anastaise replies that she is alive.
"Denial is the first step," Guinevere put a hand on Anastaise's shoulder, "But the only thing between death and undeath is two letters, sweetie. The feeling's the same."
Guinevere guides Anastaise through the fact that she is now a werewolf. Anastaise worries that if she's a werewolf, she can't be with Cyrille. Guinevere does not answer this, instead saying that there will be many challenges Anastaise will need to overcome, but that acceptance is the first way to do so.

The Plan Falls Apart

Meanwhile, Esteem does not trust Cyrille, and begins undermining their plans as Cyrille and Baptiste work to find and stop Ermaris.   Cyrille checks in on Anastaise, but Anastaise now tells Cyrille to stay away from her. She worries that turning into a werewolf could be dangerous, but Cyrille grabs her.
"I will never leave you again, my love," Cyrille's hand lifted my head to stare into his hypnotic eyes, "Until the day you love me nevermore."
Esteem doesn't like this and begins planning how to keep Cyrille away from Anastaise. Baptiste, meanwhile, continues looking over Cyrille's stolen documents and plans how to stop Ermaris.   Guinevere helps Anastaise get control of her werewolf powers while Cyrille visits every night to stay with the one they love.

The Moon Lowers

Finally, the night comes where they can corner Ermaris. Baptiste gathers Cyrille and Esteem and they set out. Anastaise asks Guinevere to let her go, and Guinevere agrees on one condition: she can go as well.   As they fight Ermaris, Esteem backstabs Cyrille, attacking him and leaving Baptiste as the sole person who can fight Eramris. He struggles but manages until Ermaris goes to attack Cyrille. Baptiste jumps in the way, sacrificing himself so Anastaise's lover can live.   This is when Guinevere arrives, breaking up Cyrille and Esteem. Guinevere distracts Ermaris, revealing herself as his long-dead wife whom he had been mourning for. Guinever reveals that this is why she knows how to work with werewolves, because her husband was one, and he had lost control of himself and killed Guinevere long ago. She says she holds no love for her ex-husband anymore. Esteem finds beauty in Guinevere's boney face, saying it reminds her of Hell. Cyrille and Anastaise rush over to the dying Baptiste, who wishes for them to live happily together.   Anastaise turns into a werewolf, managing to control her form and kills Ermaris with Cyrille's help as Esteem chases after Guinevere.

Sunlight

The shortest of the series, Sunlight features a major plot of Esteem and Guinevere, with Cyrille and Anastaise being relegated to the secondary story now.   Esteem chases after Guinevere, declaring her love and wishing to show Guinevere Hell.
"I have already seen Hell," Guinevere put a hand on Esteem's face, "Give me a moment to enjoy the sun while I still have it."
Esteem asks if she can accompany Guinevere, and Guinevere agrees. The two take a journey to an orchard, stopping along the way in places where Esteem can take the skeleton on little dates, such as by the river, in a small clearing in the forest, and even a small cafe run by Dwarves.   Finally, they reach the orchard, where Guinevere tells the story of how this is where she and Ermaris had their wedding. She expresses that she wanted to see it one more time, and how now she doesn't want to leave. Esteem finds the owner, getting as much money as she can from her Stock Trading business on Ba'al Street, and buys the orchard for Guinevere so the two of them can live happily ever after.
"I may not have shown you Hell," Esteem took the skeletal hand of her love, "But together, we shall find Heaven."   "I'd like that quite a bit," Guinevere smiled.

The Vampire and the Werewolf

Anastaise, meanwhile, ponders whether it is right to be with Cyrille after Baptiste's sacrifice. Her childhood friend was dead, and she does find herself feeling something more about him in the end. She knows Baptiste loved her, and thinks it is wrong now to be with Cyrille.   Cyrille tries to comfort her, but she finds it difficult to look at them. She decides what she needs to do is just sit with Cyrille and talk, doing so.   A lengthy discussion ensues where Cyrille expresses how they have lived an eternity, but how they only want to spend their time with Anastaise. Anastaise knows she, too, will live forever now unless killed.   Finally, Anastaise decides to settle down with Cyrille, standing over Baptiste's grave as she says:
"You only ever wanted me to be happy. In the end, you told us to be happy." I knelt down, placing flowers over his golden grave, "So I will. I'll howl at the moon in glee, I'll smile at the clouds in joy, and love my partner with bliss to spare. For you, I'll live the forever you never got to see. I'll find the happiness we had when we were younger. I promise."   Cyrille took my hand, and together we left a final kiss on the grave, standing and walking off, to live together eternally ever after.
