Dragons of Totalis
Totalis is rife with dragons that are thought to be ancient and "left over" from a period of pre-history, and each dragon has a place in the lore and mythology of the world of Totalis itself. From The World Dragons , massive creatures of legend who are thought to bring order to the world itself, dragons of different kinds, ages, and temperaments have settled across the lands of Totalis and entered the local lore, for good or for ill. Dragons rarely collaborate with each other and are highly territorial.
Dragons in Totalis are generally separated by the local populace into two distinct categories - Chromatic Dragons and Metallic Dragons.
Chromatic Dragons are known to be creatures of fear and awe by the citizenry of Totalis due to their penchant for self-service and, at times, wanton destruction. Stories regarding dragons of this time all stem from legends of Balazar, the Burning Void, a massive red dragon said to reside beep beneath the Red Wastes, slumbering until it is forced to wake and destroy Totalis entirely. Red, Blue, Green, Black, and White dragons are all said to originate from the union of Balazar himself and Quivur, the Glass Tyrant, who is said to likewise rest in the Floating Desert. Chromatic Dragons are therefore known to be feared and whenever possible, avoided - though some do see them as entities worthy of worship - for example, the city of Skieval near the center of Totalis is well known to worship a ancient white dragon known as Isenoss Zorn, Frost Arbiter.
Types of Chromatics
Each chromatic dragon color is known to have its own specific characteristics, collected in legendary form, those attributes are as follows:
- Red dragons are known to be greedy, violent, and highly territorial. They are known also to be very proud, and have, on occasion, taken over entire cities, only to force the remaining populace to bow before them, bring them tribute, and worship them.
- Blue dragons are known to be highly intelligent, and local legend tells that the best way to escape death if before a blue dragon is to offer it access to a worthwhile secret if it allows you to escape.
- White dragons are known as impressive hunters who enjoy the the thrill of the chase, and are thought to be the most animalistic of the chromatic dragon types.
- Black dragons are known to be vile creatures of cunning and terror, and are known to, whether as a matter of hyperbole or literally, feed on the fear of their prey.
- Green dragons are thought to be the most intelligent of all chromatics, and are never to be trusted. They say a green dragon always has three agendas - the one you know, the one you suspect, and the one that's real.
- Bronze dragons are thought to value justice more than their counterparts, and generally are known to have extremely high-minded ideals. Bronze dragons are the most likely to intervene for the betterment of humanoid creatures that are considered by the dragon to be "innocent" or fighting for justice.
- Gold dragons are known as intelligent studiers of humanoids, though they are thought to be aloof and keep separated from the creatures they enjoy studying. An old proverb is "If there is something interesting happening, a Gold dragon is likely in the crowd." Rarely to get involved, gold dragons are seen as watchers who occasionally put a claw on the scale to tip humanoid events in a positive direction through their foresight.
- Copper dragons are known to be fascinated by humanoid culture, and have been legendarily known to help humanoids in exchange for the display of a dance or a painting they can admire. As secretive at times as their Gold counterparts, it is not entirely unheard of to have a performance at an outdoor amphitheater draw a copper dragon to the audience.
- Brass dragons are known to be the closest to humanoids and can be seen as lorekeepers. Unlike the other metallics, brass dragons rarely conceal what they are around humanoids, instead enjoying discussing history and high-minded concepts. The largest number of dragonborn are those of the brass persuasion, and for many, brass dragons are seen as true patrons of humanoid life and history.
- Silver dragons are more legend than fact, as so few humanoids can attest to having seen one in Totalis. The only reliable legends about a silver dragon is that one is thought to reside in Brass Spire Lake North of New Alithian. Per discussions with other dragons, specifically brass, silver dragons are known to be "flighty," whatever that means.
"Extraplanar" Dragons
There are some dragon sightings and encounters that do not fit either the chromatic or metallic descriptions, leading some academics to speculate that dragons of other types exist, but reside or come from the realms known in Planar Cosmology. Some (rumored) sightings of these dragons have included descriptions such as:
- Black dragons that give off dark smoke and wilt the ground with each step, said to be dragons that come from Rekostris and are touched by the power of Veo Kres, Goddess of Darkness herself.
- Incorporeal/see-through dragons, thought to be ghosts.
- Dragons that grow crystals/gems in the areas they populate.
- "Dragons" that are living, flaming suits of armor in draconic shape, thought to be terrifying avatars from Solstara which carry out Kyrøn, God of the Day's judgement.
- Dragons of fey descent, with butterfly wings and strange abilities, thought to come from Auroris.
