Grand Duke

Originally known as the "Grand Duc" (and still referred to as such in formal documents), the title has morphed into "Grand Duke" ("Douk" vs. "Dewk") since the 1200's. In high society, people still make a point to use the archaic title. The city of Baldur's Gate has always been governed by a council, but has also always had an informal leader of some sort, who was the true power behind the council - at some point, these individuals came to be known as "Ducs" (Dukes), as they were powerful chieftains from the surrounding land who all contributed to the city. Balduran was the first person to be recognized as "Grand Duc", and since the mid-1300's, the council of Ducs has been known as the Council of Four and the Parliament officially named as such (formerly known as the "lower council" vs. the Council of Ducs which was known as the "high council" at numerous times).

Qualifications

The Grand Duke is always a competent warrior and a champion of the city.

Requirements

The holder of the rank must be some variation of human (any kind of Genasi Primer with human as their base template, a half-orc (half-Human) or half-elf (half-human) can be granted this office.

Appointment

The Grand Duke is sworn into office by the High Priest of Helm in the city, with the three members of the Council of Four being the electors.

Duties

Govern the city of Baldur's Gate and rule over the Western Heartlands. While not an official rule, the Grand Duke is required to assume formal (de jure) leadership of the Flaming Fist Mercenary Company.

Responsibilities

Attend Counil Meetings and, while not an official rule, the Grand Duke is required to assume formal (de jure) leadership of the Flaming Fist Mercenary Company.

Benefits

Permitted to live within the Ducal Palace. Paid a handsome salary.

Accoutrements & Equipment

The Grand Duke wears the armor, crowned helmet, shield and sword of Balduran on very ceremonious occasions.

Grounds for Removal/Dismissal

The other three members of the Council of Four can attempt to initiate removal procedures after a unanimous vote of no confidence. The High Priest of Helm must then hear their argument, and if he deems that they are acting in the best interest of the city, he will call upon the Parliament (which consists of the many Guild Leaders of the city, as well as representatives from every city district and representatives from the many areas outside the city). and they will vote - all of this is completely irrelevant if the last measure does not pass as well - getting the Flaming Fist Mercenary Company to effectively demote (or discharge) the reigning Grand Duke.

History

The position came about sometime in the 1100's after Balduran was appointed the Grand Duke of the city.

Cultural Significance

The Grand Duke of Baldur's Gate is informally the leader of the Lords' Alliance.
