Balduran

Balduran was a person who lived in the city Baldur's Gate , prior to the city being named as such, and is recognized as the namesake of the city and the first Grand Duke of Baldur's Gate. Balduran also lends his name to the Bay of Balduran on Anchorome, the Isle of Balduran and the Seatower of Balduran in Baldur's Gate.   Balduran was a legendary seafaring explorer. He was the first native of Faerûn to set foot on the lands known as Anchorome and made the trek up to Sossal. He returned full of tales and vast wealth, and spent most of his fortune on increasing the defenses and infrastructure of Baldur's Gate. He eventually left for Anchorome again, but his expedition did not return.   Although he invested vast amounts of money into his home-town, it is rumored that before leaving for his second and final adventure, Balduran hid the rest of his fortune along with numerous relics in one of the many caves along the Sword Coast cliffs. These cliff's are known as the Sword's Teeth.   Balduran's ship, The Wandering Eye, was discovered, shipwrecked, just a small distance from Baldur's Gate, on an island known as "the Isle of Balduran". Survivors from the expedition apparently lived on this island for generations before they were eventually discovered by Abdel Adrian during the early days of the Bhaal-Spawn Saga. The ship has since been salvaged and brought back to Baldur's Gate where it remains dry-docked and has actually been restored to seaworthy condition.   The Flaming Fist, backed by Grand Duke Entar Silvershield, went on an expedition to Anchorome to discover the fate of Balduran, but after just a brief search, they found the failed settlement of Balduran's Bay and, what they believe to have been the remains of Balduran himself, having died defending the settlement from aggressive natives. It was further more discovered that Balduran had encountered someone he referred to as the "Cursed Lord" and it was believed that this individual was behind the attack on Balduran's Bay that ultimately claimed Balduran's life.   Balduran was buried in Baldur's Gate, but monuments in his honor were erected in the Balduran's Bay and upon the Isle of Balduran. His personal relics are now used as the formal uniform of the Grand Duke. Balduran's Bay is once more a flourishing settlement, an achievement hard won by the Flaming Fist.
