Montmend

Montmend is the capital mountain-city of the dwarves. It is the ancestral home of the dwarves, and one of the oldest cities of Toriel. Trone Frozen rules the Ice-peak Concord from the throne room within the city.   Carved into the stone heart of the mountains, the mighty city of Montmend is a testament to the dwarves' strength and resilience. The city is perhaps the most intricate of the Dwarven cities, boasting many small passageways, shops built into the rock walls, and cavernous rooms. The feel of the city is a bustling, rowdy, and somewhat industrial one, where there are always a thousand things happening at any time of the day or night. However, it is predominantly safe-feeling and cozy; fires roar in the hearths of the inns and shops, and much dwarven laughing and frivolity is to be heard. The city is actually a massive cavern carved into the earth by the dwarves; the ceiling and floor are both hard stone.

Description

Montmend is structurally a giant circle of sections, it also contains several "depth" levels.

The Commons

The area known as the Commons is the main thoroughfare for trade in the city of Montmend. It contains the vault of Montmend, Auction House, the Iron Hearth Inn and the Firebrook Inn, Balgus Brewery the local brewery, and The Stone's Pillow a brothel, as well as a few shops. The Commons is always the busiest and most crowded portion of the city.

Gates of Montmend

The Gates of Montmend lead from the cold lands into the city of Montmend proper. They are a grand sight, and are visible from far across the land.

The Great Froge

The Great Forge (situated in the Great Forge District) is the heart and soul of dwarven culture, where ingenious creations and weapons are made. Located at the center of the city, and is known to never sleep. It is a noisy, hot and happy place, where the heart of city life is, as most citizens regularly pass through the forge, while visitors come to admire what is happening there.   At its center is the famed Great Anvil, where most of the best dwarven blacksmithing trainers can be found. Ringed around the Great Forge are several foundries pouring molten slag and a great deal of shops and guild offices, including trainers for cooking, mining, first aid, tailoring and leatherworking, as well as the High Seat, the court of the King Trone Frozen.   The Great Froge however, has a second purpose. It is a prison, a massive prison to accommodate for the dragon Numinex after it was defeated and captured by the dwarven army, when it came to the mountain, wounded. Now, the dragon is tortured and used to fuel the great forge, his breath producing the heat necessary for the gargantuan fore, allowing dwarves to melt even the hardest metal, such as adamantine.

The Mystic Ward

The Mystic Ward is the northwestern district of the dwarven capital of Montmend and serves as the center for magical activities and study within the city. It features a number of merchants that cater to mages. The majority of these services are based from the College of Lore, which dominates much of the district.   The ward also contains Stronmaus's Will, an extravagant marble temple that stands on the center of the ward. Enormous in size and impeccable in detail and architectural design, this hall calls artisans and crafters throughout the city for inspiration.   A number of notable and very powerful magic users reside within this area, and there are a few shops that sell magical goods.

Military Ward

The Military Ward of Montmend is a district that serves as the command center and base of Montmend military, as well as the focal point for most martial functions within the city. Central to the Military Ward is the Hall of Arms. Several supply shops and similar establishments can also be found scattered throughout the district.

Forlong Cavern

The Forlorn Cavern is a long, winding road built around Montmend's underground lake. Its naturally dark and secluded nature makes it perfect for lots of shady deals. The Cavern also holds two shops, the Stoneblade's and the Traveling Fisherman.

Hall of Explorers

The Hall of Explorers, also called the Assembly of Explorers, is a major district in the dwarven capital of Montmend and the headquarters of the famed Explorers' League. Every archaeological expedition organized by the dwarves is coordinated from here, while it also houses one of the most complete museums of artifacts in the world. It contains the library and museum

Tinker Town

Tinker Town is home to a number of alchemy and engineering, as well as the entrance to the famed Deeprun Tram leading to the mines. The Deeprun Tram is a long, fully enclosed, underground set of double tracks upon which rolls two sets of wagons leading deep down to the mines. To keep the tram running smoothly and safely, there are dwarves that work on it daily. As such, any problems with it can be quickly addressed.   The mines, rich in mithril and adamantine, run under the city, and are run by the frozen family.

History

Mountaingate War

The dwarves, like all other races, were severely damaged after the Great Extinction in 1070 BD. A huge part of the population was annihilated in a snap of the fingers. The survivors, aware of the danger that the humans who caused this disaster represented, took refuge in the mountains, barricading themselves and fortifying the accesses. In their isolation, they developed a bitterness for the humans, but more generally for all foreigners, seeing them as responsible for this disaster.   Seeking refuge for himself and the people that followed him, Reghar Fireforge begged Duncan Frozen, High King of the dwarves, to offer them shelter. However, the High King refused, explaining that there were not enough resources to share in this now desolated world.   Filled with rage and despair, Reghar knew the king was right, but he also knew that without a solution, he and his people would soon meet their demise. Faced with this grim reality, he agreed to join Kovintus' armed force when he encountered the mage. With their forces united, they launched an assault on Montmend , a battle known as the Battle of Montmend and the start of the Mountaingate War .   Reghar sought shelter and survival at any cost, while Kovintus was drawn by greed and power. When the city was overtaken by the humans, Reghar was granted a position of power. Years later, a brave dwarven warrior named Kharas Braveskin Frozen attempted to assassinate Kovintus. Although the attack left him crippled, Kovintus survived and retaliated, stabilizing his rule through iron-fisted governance.   Reghar knew this was only the beginning. Reports of dwarven troops marching towards the city echoed in his ears. As the inner struggle of Montmend consumed his attention, Kovintus was unprepared for the marching armies of other dwarven noble houses. Reghar fled the city before the Battle of the Frozen mountains.   Montmend fell back into dwarven hands, and Kovintus was defeated, bringing an end to his reign as High King. The Mountaingate War came to a close, and Montmend returned to its rightful rulers, the dwarves. Reghar now on the run again with a much smaller group of survivors, Reghar sought another way to survive, knowing that danger and uncertainty lurked at every turn. Reghar and his people ultimately died of starvation in the following years, unable to find shelter.

Draco-Giant War

In 360 BD The fragile balance was shattered when a group of ravenous Hill Giants from the Frosted heights tracked wounded prey to the lair of a dragon named Numinex. Enraged that their feast had been usurped by the dragon, they attacked, managing to wound the dragon before meeting their demise at its claws.   Seeking justice, the dragon appealed to the Golden Five , hoping for intervention on behalf of the giants encroaching upon its domain. However, the council dismissed the matter as a trivial squabble, further infuriating the dragon. Incensed by the council's indifference, the dragon took matters into its own claws. Hovering above the hill giants' village, it unleashed its icy breath, encasing the entire settlement in a deadly frost, exterminating the giants within.   Upon learning of the massacre, the giants, though hill giants ranking lowest in the ordning among true giants, could not allow such an act to go unpunished. Dispatching a group of Cloud Giants , they ambushed the snow-colored dragon in its slumber, swiftly ending its life.   Neighboring dragons, in retaliation, decimated the villages of giants within their respective territories. Despite attempts by the Golden Five to quell the escalating conflict, their efforts fell on deaf ears, and soon, the skirmishes escalated into a large battles through the dwarven lands as the dragons of the frosted height united under a common army: The first dragon army.   Numinex, the original dragon attacked by hill giants became the breathking of that first army in 355 BD, assembling like-minded dragon under his commandment.   The first dragon army asserting its dominance against the giant of the frosted height, dispatched their forces to the dwarvish strongholds, looking to subdue the dwarven folks, using them as infantry into their war. Numinex held a personal grudge against the dwarves who previously opposed him.   For 3 years they fought a protracted campaign for control over the region. Many fiercely resist the First army occupation and the resistance, sponsored by Voninerike , managed to capture the first army breathking, Numinex, in 352 BD. The dwarves seeing in his caputre a vengeance for his past deeds against the dwarves.   Second in command, the wingduke Kansaldi Fire-eyes, another dragon and Numinex acolyte redirected the army away from the dwarvish strongholds, unwilling and unable to sacrifice more ressources to save her breathking, she became the official leader of the first army, and claimed the title of breathking.
