Jan'ahrem Character in Toriel | World Anvil

Jan'ahrem

"Do not fear the winds of change - they will always be at your back."

Goddess of the sea and wind

An ancient goddess, Jan'ahrem (often called Jana) protects the dispossessed, her presence is most often felt as a soothing breeze, but can become a ferocious tempest against her enemies. She also can manifest in corporeal form as an ethereal figure, comforting the downtrodden. Over the eons, Jana has witnessed the rise and fall of the elves. Through it all, she remains steadfast as a beacon of hope to those in need.   Impassive and slow to anger, Jana is secure in the knowledge that there are few beings that can threaten her status. Once her ire is aroused, however, it is as unstoppable as a cresting wave. To most mortals, Jana is the wind and the sea. The wind and waves, the tides, and the ocean’s bounty—all these are Jana’s dominion. Jana is never satisfied with the status quo, just like the sea and winds, she change on a whims. There is no ultimate goal to this ongoing transformation; the purpose is change itself.

History

Storm's Fury

Since ancient times, there have been those who prayed to the winds. From sailors seeking good weather to the downtrodden calling on winds of change, mortals have placed their hope in the tempests and gales that sweep across Toriel.   Surprisingly, the wind sometimes would seem to answer. Seafarers might spot a bright bright blue bird just before a healthy tailwind billowed their sails. Others could swear they'd heard a whistling in the air right before a storm, as if to warn them of its approach. As word of these omens spread, sightings of the bird grew more common. Some even swore they had seen the bird transform into a woman. With tapered ears and flowing hair, this mysterious maiden was said to float above the water and direct the wind with a flick of her staff.   The faithful called this woman Jan'ahrem, an ancient elven word meaning “guardian,” for she always seemed to appear in moments of great need. As time went on, she came to be known more simply as Jana. Her name spread across the elven kingdoms, the sea elves were her most fervent believers. Statues and shrines were raised in gratitude for Jana's benevolence.   Many offered prayers to Jana, these mortals often wore amulets with the image of a bluebird, tokens in Jana's honor.

The great Extinction

After the great extinction, once most mortals were dead, the rare elven survivor that couldn't get back to the feywild called out the name of their ancient protector: Jana. Through her worshipper mostly died, the goddess gathered all her remaining power to protect those who called upon her, especially during the Draco-Giant War. Immense gale sweeping over the land when dragons were approaching, trying to ward them off, as she took corporeal form.   Impossible walls of air held the dragon away as people fled the ruins of what was once their homes. Ferocious gusts of wind cut through the suffocating smoke from fires caused by the destruction. Yet while she saved many, thousands still perished—but all who survived witnessed Janna's benevolence. those elves, later forming the bulk of elven survivors on still on Toriel, were the dark elves, now called drow.
