Brandobaris

God of adventure, thievery, journey and freedom

Dashing trickster, patron of thieves, and star of fantastical fables and wild stories of adventure — that’s the legacy of Brandobaris, the Master of Stealth. Stories of Brandobaris, full of artful trickery and narrow escapes, inspire many young halflings to play at roguish pursuits. In their imagination, a grain silo becomes a lofty wizard’s tower to scale in search of treasures, or a rowboat becomes the setting for a swashbuckling adventure. And for some — the youngsters who are said to “have a bit of Brandobaris in them” — that play-acting is the prelude to a life of living as Brandobaris does: always on the lookout for the next challenge.   Although he never seems to rest in his travels, Brandobaris always has time to reward halflings who dare to take risks and explore the world to make their own mark on it. He has been known to give a bit of aid to halflings in dire straits, turning them invisible for a time or intervening so that they can’t be heard or tracked.   Brandobaris's commandments:
  • Life is a journey meant to be explored. Take chances, defy odds, and find joy in the thrill of the unknown.
  • Use cunning and cleverness to overcome oppressive forces.
  • Face hardships with laughter and optimism, for a light heart is as vital as a sharp wit.

Abilities

When Brandobaris moves stealthily, no mortal or god can hear his footfalls — an ability he uses not only for defense, but also to bestow unlooked-for treats upon those he favors.

History

Halfling Genesis

Brandobaris a Human god known for his cunning and audacity hatched a plan to outwit Surtur. He successfully infiltrated Surtur's hoard, which contained exquisitely crafted artifacts of immense power. In an audacious heist, Brandobaris managed to steal from the hoard, causing Surtur to erupt in fury.   In his rage, Surtur cursed Brandobaris and all his followers, shrinking them down to the size of half-men. However, Brandobaris, true to his nature, took this drastic transformation lightly, even finding humor in it. Many gods, including Waukeen and Cyrrollalee, saw the curse as unjust, especially for Brandobaris's devoted followers.   In an act of solidarity and sympathy, Waukeen and Cyrrollalee decided to stand with Brandobaris and his followers. They willingly shrank themselves down to the size of halflings and bestowed their divine blessings upon the transformed humans. These blessings included the gifts of luck and perpetual joyfulness to assist them in navigating the challenges of their newfound existence.

New domain

Brandobaris saw Corellon as he embarked on a journey to help the elves against another demon invasion, and decided to follow him. He witnessed the tragic fight between him and his daughter: Nymue Loth.   As the battle reached its climax and the weakened god fell, Brandobaris snatched his divine essence while Nymue capture the dead god's soul. The elves feel the shock of their god’s death through the planes, and Brandobaris became the god of journey and freedom in addition to thievery and adventure.

Friendship

A gnome named Stiboule Souplet escaped the afterlife, fleeing from Vanadon-Necroth he ended up in Brandobaries' domain. With his trademark charm, he befriended Brandobaris through cookies and outrageous stories, ensuring his legend lived on beyond the mortal realm.
