Doat Proper

Below the blistering surface of the Ruins of Doat is a breathtaking array of tunnels leading to the salvaged civilization of Doat. Discovered by accident while mining, the Guilds of Iron and Glass chose to leave the surface dwellers of Doat and continue to explore and colonize the underdark. Their final blow against Doat was to reroute the pure spring water before they could reach the surface and manage them within their caverns and aquifers. This forced the surface dwellers of Doat to leave or perish.

Demographics

Primarily inhabited by Dwarves and Gnomes, they are opened to outsiders that prove they have viable skills to offer. A district of workers, they mine, smelt, and polish ore and gems taking great pride in their trade and only working with a few trusted merchants to export their wares. While the are primarily industrial, wealth has been fairly even in distribution between both races.

Government

The guild hierarchy remains in place, with the Iron guild (mostly Dwarves) out numbering the Glass Guild (mostly Gnomes). Every five years, a great competition is held to determine which guild shall be the head Arbiter of a council of seven.

Industry & Trade

Primary industry is mining and smithing. Gem cutting and jewel crafting may pay higher, but the resources require more time and effort to gather. The primary import for Doat Proper is Ironwood a key ingredient for many of the mechanisms, tools, and production equipment.

Infrastructure

Underground waterways are beginning to have waterwheels installed as a means of harnessing the current for higher production value of smithing. Power hammers and jeweler's wheels are common in most shops. Running water and sewer is managed through a careful set of tide tables.

Guilds and Factions

The Iron Guild is made up of miners and smiths. The Glass guild originally only had gemologists and jewelers, but has grown to include other craftsmen that do not work with iron or steel. The Paper Guild is not truly a guild, but is a writ of award presented to merchants authorize to trade and negotiate on behalf of the leadership. Such a writ is carefully guarded and treated with great honor.

History

As leadership of Doat fell apart, the Iron and Glass guilds moved underground and sealed out the surface. The found ancient ruins and began to rebuild them into a more sustainable city-state. They have been active and thriving for nearly seven centuries and continue to expand their reach.

Architecture

Carved stone is austere and unadorned, but colored banners hang limply in the cool air.

Geography

Underground tunnels and rivers traverse Doat Proper. Some areas are only accessible by small barges while other tunnels are large enough of three wagons to pass at the same time for miles. Luminous lichen has been cultivated over the years to provide lighting throughout the most well-traveled tunnels, and local creatures are often relocated to provide defenses against enemies.

Natural Resources

Iron, silver, and mithril ore is mined, along with gemstones. Luminous lichen is harvested for crafting as well.
