Hamato Isao
Isao Hamato
Appearance
Isao appears as a middle aged Japanese man with short, salt and pepper hair. He dresses slightly less traditionally than his parents, often wearing a more modern styled Haori with a comfortable t shirt and long black pants.Personality
Isao adopts a lot of the more serious traits from his father. He is a man who frets too much over what his son Ryuji is doing, or drama going on in the family. He tries his best to keep up his role as chunin after Yoshi had left, despite never really wanting that responsibility, and he finds it diffcult to motivate himself to train his children when the only portal to the Yokai Realm has been closed for years.History
Being the youngest boy in the house, Isao never felt as much pressure to be good at ninjutsu like his brother an Saki were. The two of them competed so often for their fathers attention that Isao often fell into the background, where he became lazy and complacent. He knew that no matter what, Yoshi would become Chunin and handle most of the yokai duties. Instead he spent most of his time focused on his studies, planning to get into a really good university and get his dream job. But that all fell through when the drama with Saki started, and his sister-in-law Tang Shen was murdered. Yoshi, her husband, had fallen into a state of depression for a long time afterwards, and then promptly left without saying a word. With Saki and Yoshi both gone, the role of chunin had to be placed on Isao. This meant he had quit university and give up on his career to fulfill his family duty. Obviously, this left Isao furious at Yoshi for abandoning his family, and messing everything up. He held onto this grudge for a long time, but after years of not hearing from Yoshi, decided to focus on his family instead.Relationships
History
Isao met Shiho while they were still going to medical school together. They were already dating when Isao had to quit school to take on his duty as Chunin. Shiho loved Isao and found his family fascinating so they continued to date while she finished school and they eventually got married. Isao taught Shiho martial arts so she could better fit in with the family, and she picked up on it pretty easily. They would eventually have 3 kids together.
History
As chunin, Isao was tasked with training the next generation in martial arts when they came of age, including his own son. However, Isao was never all that interested in the idea of taking on this role, and by the time Ryuji was of age, the portal had been closed for years, with no sign of ever being reopened. This waned Isao's motivation to train his son, and Ryuji could feel it. Ryuji is frequently disappointed in his father's unwillingness to teach him anything but the basics. Isao insists that the age of the guardian clans died with the portal, and that Ryuji needs to focus on a his studies and getting a real job. There is a significant rift in their relationship caused by this disagreement.
History
Isao was Yoshi's little brother. The two were close enough, but Isao often felt pushed into the background due to Yoshi and Saki's dynamic. It seemed like whenever they talked all Yoshi would do was talk about training, or rant about Saki. The times where they would actually relax and hang out like kids were few and far between, and he ended up being a lot closer to his other siblings than to Yoshi. Still, Isao looked up to Yoshi as someone who could protect the family when things got bad, and cared for him a lot regardless of their relationship. He felt helpless when he couldn't ease Yoshi's grief of losing Tang Shen and begged him not to leave.
Relationship Reasoning
Currently Isao is a little bitter about Yoshi. Because he left, Isao had to take role of Chunin and give up his university and his dream job, only for nothing to come of it as his family sealed off the Yokai Realm portal. He feels a lot of anger and resentment toward Yoshi for leaving them behind and not writing, and for a while he was convinced the man was dead. He also tends to blame Yoshi for his son's lack of respect for him, rather than his own failings as a father and teacher. Deep down, Isao wants to forgive Yoshi and go back to the way things were before, but even after seeing him again for the first time in 20 years, he still needs time to heal from the wound he left behind.
History
Isao is one of Ayumi's older brothers. They were both the middle children growing up and so were pretty close. When Isao felt left out from Yoshi and Saki's activities, he would often go to play with his littler sisters instead. Isao was the one to help Ayumi whenever she struggled with training and was always around to talk to. Ayumi was the one to initially convince Isao to go to medical school when it seemed like the ninja-life style was wearing him out, and she also fully supported him when he eventually had to quit to take on the role of Chunin.
Relationship Reasoning
As adults, Ayumi and Isao are pretty close, but don't talk as often as they could, do to Ayumi no longer living in the house. She can see that the role of chunin has it's toll on Isao and can't help but feel pity for him. Isao takes on that role so that she or Fusae don't have to, and she can appreciate that. She will come and check on the estate whenever she can, maybe not so much for her father, but to check on her mother and siblings.
Relationship Reasoning
Fusae is pretty close with Isao. As kids they would tease each other a lot, and still do it to this day as adult. She's always trying to get the man to smile through all of the stress he deals with.
