Hamato Hisashi Character in TMNT: Mystic Forest | World Anvil

Hamato Hisashi

Hisashi Hamato

Hisashi is the oldest in the Hamato Clan and the active patriarch of it. He is the father of Splinter and the grandfather of the Turtles.

Appearance

Hisashi is an elderly Japanese man. He is bald with a long grey beard. He dresses in traditional clothing, primarily a kimono.

Personality

He is a rather grumpy man, with a stoic face that is hard to read. He rarely shows much a emotion, but will raise his voice on occasion. He is a man that is fickle about tradition and get irritated with his family's waning interest in upholding the duties of The Guardian Clans. He is a stern man whose rule is law in the house, and his punishments can be harsh, but he will always relent to his kinder, if not more persistant wife Yoko.

History

Like his father, and his grand father before him, Hisashi trained his whole life to be a Guardian of the Yokai Realm. It was always something he was very passionate about, and he spend most of his adult life trading with the Yokai, defending them against threats, and escorting wanderers on Earth back home.   When Hisashi was only 19, his father Yuuta Hamato would mysteriously perish in the yokai realm, and he became the leader of the Hamato clan as a young adult, before he had even met his wife Yoko. His father's cause of death was unknown, but there was many clues pointing to a yokai being the murderer, which made him suspicious of yokai crossing into the human realm from then on.
He would later marry Yoko and have 4 children with her. Meanwhile, a friend from another guardian clan, Oroku Keiji had grown sick and needed someone to take in his grandson, Saki, as his parents were already gone and he had no family left. Hisashi would adopt Saki as one final favor to their ally clan.   This decision would come back to haunt his family. Hisashi would unintentionally show favoritism towards his eldest son Yoshi, and when it seemed clear that Saki's insecurities where causing him to fall behind, Hisashi sent him away to do some self reflection. Unfortunately after Saki returned he had been in communication with the Yoroi Ketsueki, and had sworn loyalty to it. Because of this betrayal, had to banish Saki from the Hamato Clan.   This would end in Saki retaliating, and the death of his son's wife, his daughter in-law Tang Shen. Saki would avoid justice by fleeing the country to America. Seeing his son fall into such a depressive state, he sent Yoshi to go find Saki, and bring him to justice before he tries to access another yokai portal.

Yoko and Hisashi have been married for a long time and the leaders of the Hamato Clan for even longer. They are devoted to each other and started a large family together, but the still will bicker between each other. Yoko and Hisashi don't always see eye to eye on many issues regarding the family. Hisashi wants to see the family go bad to their traditional roots, while Yoko would rather do whatever it took to make sure their children and grandchildren were living happy, fulfilling lives.   Depsite their bickering, Yoko is an very persistent and persuasive woman and will usually force Hisashi to ease up on his attitude towards the kids.

History

Hisashi is the father of Ayumi. Growing up the two never had the best relationship. Hisashi was always very strict about tradition and in contrast, Ayumi was quite the free thinker. She wasn't as much interested in ninjutsu as her father would have liked, and he didn't want her pursuing a career as an author, believing it to be a distraction.   He also heavily disagreed on her relationship with Hayato, and wouldn't approve a marriage between them until Ayumi got pregnant with his child. Eventually, their fighting got so toxic that Ayumi made the decision to move out of the estate entirely with her family, a decision Hisashi resents to this day.

Relationship Reasoning

Hisashi and Ayumi do not see eye to eye on many issues. Things are cordial between them, if only because they no longer live in the same space together, and Ayumi is free to not talk to him if she doesn't feel like. The two tolerate each other whenever she visits to check on the rest of the family, but they rarely talk beyond small talk anymore.   Deep down, Ayumi wants to have a better relationship with her dad, but can't with how stubborn he tends to be.
