The Dragon Krenar

Do not wake the mountain
— Vosti saying
Each of the Abravosti cultures has its own tale to tell about where they first came from. The Yulemto of the northern islands claim they came from across the vast oceans. The Skarhans of the west say they were born from the volcano of Prelt. The Telziado say they came from the sea foam on the beaches. For the Vosti in the south, their origin is perhaps the strangest of all - that they were born from the blood of an ancient dragon, slain by the Divinities themselves.

The Myth

In the most common versions of the tale, there exist many dragons in the oceans. Some are the size of islands, while others are the size of entire continents. The dragon Krenar is one of the latter, as long as Abravost is tall, and one wing as long as it is wide. Krenar preys upon the weak peoples of the continent, emerging from his sea grotto to feed, laying across the continent to nap in the sun, before returning to the depths.   The Divinities, particularly the Divinity of Justice, grow sick of the constant deaths, and come up with a plan. After Krenar falls asleep, Justice forms pacts with dozens of mortals, who clamber upon Krenar's barnacled hide. On Justice's mark, the mortals plunge enchanted spears into the dragon, whose pained roars and thrashing sends tremors throughout the land. All the mortals are killed in the encounter, but the deed is done - the dragon lays dead.   Justice, not satisfied with the deaths of their pact partners, collects their bodies to place them within the pool of the dragon's blood. Shortly thereafter, they are reborn - They are the original Vosti. Krenar's body is left where it lies, and slowly merges with the land around it, becoming the Krenar Mountains which separate the eastern portion of the continent from everywhere else. Krenar does get something of the last laugh - their tail and head, which dangle off the edge of the continent, serve to prevent safe passage to the east, blocking the Vosti from the land.

Historical Basis

As far as anyone knows, there is no such thing as a dragon, and it's highly unlikely the Krenar Mountains are made from a dragon's corpse. Just as with the other cultural origin stories (with the possible exception of the Yulemto), it is merely a story intended to give the listener a sense of cosmic destiny and uniqueness amongst the other cultures.

A Draconic Perimeter

Many other cultures in Abravost have stories of dragons, albeit not in their 'origins'. Most notably is the Yulemto, who claims that during their years long voyage from their original homeland to their current home in the Yulemta Archipelago, half of their people were eaten by a vast silver dragon. This dragon supposedly wrapped its body around the entire continent, preventing anyone from entering or leaving.   While most main-landers scoff at the idea of a dragon around the perimeter, coast dwellers know better. There must be a reason that no sailor ever returns from over the horizon.
