The Citadel of Scaram

The Citadel of Scaram is a walled enclosure surrounding a tall, square tower known as the Blue Tower. It is the traditional residence and office for the Lord Mayor of the City of Scaram and is located along the eastern city walls of the city. The Citadel is a very, very old structure. So old, in fact, that there is real debate as to just when the oldest sections of the fortress were built.

Purpose / Function

Originally a defensive fortress built to defend the eastern half of the city from attack and siege but now it is the residence and workspace of the Lord Mayor of Scaram and his household.

Architecture

The most common building material used in the many phases of the Citadel's construction is the clean, fine-grained limestone found throughout the entire city. The most obvious exception to this generalization is the center tower of the Citadel, which is made of an imported bluestone cut from quarries around Cyell. This central tower, known universally as the "Blue Tower", is the Mayor's actual residence and home. His offices, and the offices and quarters for his clerks and staff, are located above the Citadel's gatehouse which opens onto Garden Street in the eastern half of the inner city.

Defenses

While the Citadel might still look like an actual fortress, there are very few functional defensive features remaining in the complex. The main gate to the interior court of the Citadel has no gates and is usually used as part of the fruit and vegetable market that operates on Garden Street three days a week. The walls are intact but are not patrolled or guarded at all. There is a footman stationed at the entrance to the Blue Tower who might be mistaken for a guard on a very dark, moonless night. There are no shutters or bars on any of the windows anywhere in the Citadel.
