Amirate of Cartor

The Cartorian Amirate, or the Amirate of Cartor, is a sovereign nation centered on the island of Cartor in The Southern Isles. The Amirate holds more than 6,500 square miles of islands and more than 20,500 square miles of mainland as its territory, making the Island of Cartor roughly the size of the State of Connecticut and the mainland holdings about the size of the State of West Virginia. The Amirate has a total population of more than 550,000 souls, most of which are Human.   The Amirate is a hereditary monarchy with the Amir iba Samas (the Prince/Son of Samas) ruling absolutely from his capital in Abusama (the City of Samas). The Amir rules over a country with a strong and vibrant population. Few nations in the known world have as dense an urban population as Cartor. Many cities within the Amirate boast populations well in excess of 30,000 souls, and nearly 70% of the subjects of the Amir live in cities.

Structure

Absolute rule by the Holy Amir in the name of the god Samas.  The Amir is the last word in all matters of politics, faith and justice within the Amirate.

Culture

Cartorian society is very insular and self-isolated.  Cartorians do not look to build relationships with foreign powers or states, and interactions with other countries are most commonly seen to be defending themselves against attack or invasion.

History

The Amirate was founded more than 800 years earllier when the native people of the region coalesced under the rule of the first Amir, Habeed al'Azeem.  In 266 BF (500 years before present) the Amir Jaffahr IV made the first child sacrifice to Samas and cemented the Cult of Samas as the collective religion of the Amirate.

Demography and Population

There is very little diversity within the Cartorian population.  99% of all inhabitants are Human and there are less than 6,000 non-humans living in the Amirate full time.  More than 300,000 souls live on the island of Cartor, and the remaining 250,000 subjects of the Amir live along the coastal holdings of the mainland.  There are five large cities on the mainland, all near the sea and all close to navigable rivers that lead deep into the interior of mountainous jungles.

Territories

The island of Cartor itself is less than 5,600 square miles and the continental holdings of the Amirate just more than three times that many square miles at 20,500. Much of the interior areas of the mainland territories are very sparsely populated with the bulk of the 250,000 subjects there living in or very near the five major cities found near the coast.

Military

The Amirate has a military tradition of great renown all across the region.  Its warriors and commanders are nearly legendary in their ability to win wars and battles against far superior numbers of enemy soldiers, which the Cartorians atribute solely to the blessings of Samas upon his worshipful subjects.

Religion

The only religious practice allowed in the Amirate is the worship of Samas through the rituals and sacrifices of the Cult of Samas.  With the ritual sacrifice of a newborn infant three times a year, the Holy Blood of Samas is gained and consumed by the elite of the land and the nation as a whole benefits.

Foreign Relations

The Amirate is quite insular in its relations with foreign states.  Trade is limited to the open ports of the main island of Cartor and the two largest mainland harbors only, and no trade is allowed overland to the continental territories.  This is to deter and prevent invasion from foreign lands and to limit the exposure of the subjects of the Holy Amir to foreign peoples.
