The Tailsman

A large precursor space station which orbits the Eternity Gate at a radius of about 2 ly from its center.

From the perspective of the Hyperion Federation, The Tailsman is the only known object orbiting the Gate with the exception of some Hyperion Federation science ships and stations which have been placed there relatively recently. It is still not known what function the Tailsman served, but is presumed to be somehow related to the Eternity Gate it orbits. It has presumably remained there for almost a billion years, as that is the estimated age of the Gate and Tailsman. Some theories suggest that it could be a power source, other theories say it could be an auxiliary control center. Some more wild theories mention that it could be a way to contact the Xadia Ancients - despite the Xadia species being very likely extinct.

Much like the Gate, many HF scientists have managed to enter the Tailsman - with relative ease, to the surprise of many. The 24 km long and wide station has several probably major rooms: a large 'generator' room, a 'data center' that the HF is constantly trying to access, some areas that are presumably living sections that might have housed some ancient Xadia, and probably also some sections used by the station to automatically adjust course. This was found to be after a large HF ship came close to it which would have changed its course due to microgravity, but have noticed the station returned to its course immediately using a number of thrusters. The largest section is comprised of a single, large machine of unknown purpose.

The true purpose of the station is to contact another, similar station orbiting the destination Eternity Gate. This would allow both gates to make a connection and is thus a vital part in the operation of the gate. It did indeed house a number of people of the Xadia species.
