Sulethis

Homeworld of the Sulethis Republic.   The world has several spots where ion interference constantly bombards the terrain and anything that moves there. This is due to more chaotic weather patterns and an abundance of magnetic materials. The magnetic field of the world prefers to take the easier path underground in these areas, so there is almost a complete lack of magnetic field. Compasses will not work. This phenomenon is only present in several areas of the planet though, typically no larger than about 10 km in radius. Furthermore, the rest of the world is impacted by rare events changing the entire ecosystem. All creatures here are either extinct or can adapt to these changes rapidly.   Due to the very weak magnetic field, there are very few species with magnetoreception. They have mostly relied on the stars, which are only visible at night, to navigate. Non-nocturnal species can see them at night to determine the general direction they must travel in to reach their desination and then remember the direction for the rest of the day. Not all species rely on navigation like this of course, but many do.   The abundance of magnetic materials has given the To'rer'ot a massive number of possible places to mine ore though. As metal became very cheap, many things involving it also became cheap and allowed them to build higher quality structures and also larger structures. Their first launch pads for space rockets were very large and elaborate, accounting for rooom for future upgrades and giving the pre-unification To'rer'ot very easy access to space. After the accident that terrified the Sulethis Republic culture of space travel, they instead began to launch drones rather than crewed rockets. They have managed to get surprisingly far with this, forming the modern SR.
