Magica

A magica (plural magicae) is the mark a Solomonar receives from the Dracul at their admission to the Scholomance. A Solomonar's magica marks them as 'special' amongst other magicians; since the Scholomance is widely considered the most prestigious magic school in Thenia (and perhaps the world), the magica is considered an honor to receive.   Magicae usually change the eyes, hair, or skin of a person, but other changes are possible. Receiving a magicae also means that the receiver's blood is no longer red. For example, Kazza Hallow bleeds black while Julian Lukazik bleeds white.

Causes

The Solomonari are given this mark on the day they accept their admission. The Dracul casts a spell and the magica is a manifestation of the spell: they are amongst the chosen Solomonari. The spell is only known to the Solomonari, and it's said that even if another magician or witch were to uncover the secrets, it wouldn't work on them and in fact, would kill them. (This has not yet been proven.)

Affected Groups

Only the Solomonari receive a magica.

Cultural Reception

As mentioned, the magica is a prestigious mark to receive, and so most will know a Solomonari without even knowing their name. However, some of the magicae are jarring: for example, Kazza Hallow's completely black eye (the other being gold) and Julian Lukazik's completely white eyes can be off-putting to some. Although it's certainly possible to spell the mark to not be visible, most Solomonari would never consider hiding it.
