Hoxi

"The Hidden Temples of the Hoxi hold ancient mysteries and dangers."
A secretive, dark feathered avian species that makes its homes high in the mountains of Boreas.   They are avid technologist and can be found across the varied starships of Old Union Space, working as specialists as often as they are found running thief rings on space stations. Entire bands of them form some of the most expansive pirate groups in the system.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Squat, corvid-esque avian humanoids without the ability to fly. They are feathered all over with long raven-like beaks.

Genetics and Reproduction

The Hoxi genetics are stable and they reproduce by laying eggs, usually in clutches of 3-6.

Growth Rate & Stages

Hoxi are considered mature at the age of 9 and adults by 14, they tend to live for 50 years.

Ecology and Habitats

They live on the high peaks of Boreas, often in underground warrens that they guard the locations of fervently.

Dietary Needs and Habits

They are omnivores with a preference for fruit, which is very hard to find outside of the more advanced settlements that have enough recovered tech to grow them.

Behaviour

Hoxi are secretive creatures, most preferring to live outside of the notice of other sentient creatures entirely. They covet technology and information, hoarding secrets like some hoard food or money.    They are distrustful of non-Hoxi, an intense defensive xenophobia that sometimes even extends to Hoxi outside of their settlement or even family. Once they are friends with you however, they will never betray you and consider the betrayal of trust, once given, to be the highest of insults.

Additional Information

Social Structure

The family structure for the Hoxi is based mostly around nest-mates. An average clutch of Hoxi eggs is 2-6 eggs, the siblings grow up doing everything together and tend to have greater bonds with their brothers and sisters than their mother and father. These bonds can often be stronger than even a mated pair.   The social hierarchy is based around the gathering of technology, usually by any means necessary as long as those means do not lead angry mobs back towards their home. Leaders among the Hoxi are those who have either created new technology that betters the settlement or have retrieved a technology from outside that does the same. Hoxi society lauds the inventor and the thief, as long as what is stolen is not from the Hoxi.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

The Hoxi are mostly found high in the mountains of Boreas though they can also be found in cities, mostly Gorgol, across Boreas. They also have a relatively large amount of their populace living as spacers since the Union of Gilnares made contact with them, Hoxi like the sense of weightlessness that space brings them as it makes them feel as though they have the wings they think lost to myth and legend.

Civilization and Culture

Naming Traditions

The Hoxi tend towards short names and only have surnames if they choose to, usually a name chosen by their nest-mates as a group though they will often use their settlements name as one. They sometimes will use both a chosen surname and a Settlement name in conjunction, usually when talking to other Hoxi directly so to better identify themselves.

Beauty Ideals

The idealized colors are those that are seen on the Holoxi of myth and legend, the Hoxi love bright greens, blues and reds and will often use paint on their own feathers to add these colors on their usually drab plumage.    Intelligence, creativity and subtlety are all traits that are considered  beautiful by the Hoxi, physical traits are rarely cared about as the Hoxi generally compare themselves to the Holoxi and find their physical forms drab by comparison.

Gender Ideals

There is no social or sexual dimorphism among the Hoxi whatsoever and gender only comes up with mated pairs that are planning on having children.

Courtship Ideals

Those interested in partnerships of any sort know that the surest way to another Hoxi's heart is by creating something beautiful or ingenious, especially through technology.

Relationship Ideals

The dream of many a Hoxi is a partnership that leads to the invention or recreation of some amazing technological marvel and they often emphasis pairing with other Hoxi who are working on some of the same things they are, or stealing the same things they want.

Average Technological Level

The Hoxi were at a mixed industrial level of advancement before first contact with the Union of Gilnares, their specific technological level differed from region to region, settlement to settlement as it depended on their access to ancient Holoxi tech. With air and space travel becoming more available to the Hoxi, the disparity has flattened across the Hoxi settlements as they shared their technologies between their cities.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

The Hoxi get along well with other species, though they are rarely honest with them they are almost always congenial. They do not consider lying to non-Hoxi as a moral failing and consider honesty to others a privilege the other must earn instead of one granted by default.

Hoxi in the Union of Gilnares

The Hoxi were rarely found in the employ of the Union itself, preferring to live and work in the underbelly of the enormous bureaucracy. Those that did choose to align with the Union found much use for their skills both as particularly stealthy operatives and as intelligent and curious technologist.    No Hoxi outside of those already aligned to the Union of Gilnares took part in the conflicts surrounding the Dissolution, as with many on Boreas most did not even realize something of that nature was happening until it was nearly over. This lead to a mass exodus however as the Hoxi thought there would be a system rife for the picking in terms of salvage and thievery in the chaos, an assumption that was not entirely incorrect as time went on.    They rarely live planetside outside of Boreas, though it is not entirely unheard of. They have a bad reputation in Old Union Space, a reputation gained in the last 20 years since the dissolution came to its de-facto end and they have become one of the most recognizable groups of plunderers, thieves and pillagers in the system.
