Holoxi

The Holoxi were a proud avian species that dominated the upper peaks of Boreas far above the other species of Boreas and were, at one point, the most technologically advanced species on the world. They mastered advanced metallurgy and methods of travel between cities using lighter than air ships. 
From their vast temple cities they ruled large sections of the their mountainous home with only the Giants to share their harsh land with they came to dominate the area. For the Giants part they seemed to dote on the Holoxi, with several giants becoming benefactors and patrons of favorite cities, sharing giant technology with a select few. This lead to a golden age for the Holoxi, though they never sought the stars it was not for a lack of the means to do so. Poverty and Hunger were all but eliminated. 
It was the sharing of this technology that ultimately lead to the species downfall. The Holoxi grew jealous and strove to drag more technological secrets from the giants. After several explosive events, one of which having lead to the deaths of several giants and a high profile situation involving several giants held captive under invasive scientific study, the Giants struck the Holoxi down for what they considered their immense Hubris. 
To call it a war would be to compare a fight between a toddler and a trained warrior. The giants, seen as mostly reclusive hermits unveiled the power they had hidden since the Holoxi had first stumbled out of their nests and created fire. Every Holoxi city was shattered through surgical strikes, sleek airships and energy weapons far beyond what the Holoxi could create were deployed to literally burn the "Rot" out of the mountains. 
To add insult to injury, the Giants developed a powerful virus and deployed it against the survivors. This Virus had a 30% mortality rate on the survivors, causing their feathers to fall out and their bones to twist and grow onto themselves like cancerous growths. Those who survived suffered various side effects but the most horrendous of all was that all children born were born as stunted versions of Holoxi, flightless and short with their feathers darkened to blacks and greys from their once vibrant crests and plumes. 
Within ten generations, the Holoxi were transformed into the Hoxi and the only traces of their once proud heritage was in the ruins of their cities and in the rare, often hidden, records of that time. At this point in time, the Hoxi "Fall from Grace" is myth and legend among them with most considering it as such, the truth hidden by time and trauma.
