Boreas (Bor-Ee-as)

The largest moon in the Gilnares system. It is a planet of extremes with some of the most hostile yet bountiful environments in the system.     Home to the Gorgol, the Marad, the Holoxi, the Bhozjnaak, the Eweoese as well as the various reclusive species of Giant. It has never been under any formal control of any outside force and recognizes no worldwide government, though various groups have claimed it in the past. The Union of Gilnares started several colonies which persist to this day, though they are long independent from the Union Remnants they still serve as the only real spaceports on the planet.

Geography

Boreas is an enormous planetary body with huge, varied terrain and ecosystems. There are five major continents that are home to immense biodiversity.    The world is a study in extremes with incredibly biodiverse megafauna striding a world seemingly sized up from those found elsewhere.

Deserts

The Deserts of Boreas have some of the hottest temperatures in the system and are often ringed by enormous badlands with deep canyons. The deserts are often scattered with large sandstone buttes that thrust their way out of the desert at seemingly random intervals.    Not every Desert is the same though and they owe their creation to multitudes of natural phenomena.    The Marad and the Bhozjnaak live in environments on the outskirts, the first enjoying savannahs and light forest while the latter living in deep canyons and upon tall buttes.    The Gorgol are the only species to commonly live directly in them, wandering between distant oasis or living in deep tunnel complexes under the sands.

Mountains

The mountains of Boreas nearly break the atmosphere in some places and are fierce peaks full of storms, dangerous creatures and hidden Giant settlements. They are mostly impassable except through rift valleys, passes and rivers. The Holoxi make their homes among the high peaks and deep within the the guts of the mountains.    The ranges break up the continents with a degree of finality not found in many other places as they are often high and extreme enough to cut off weather patterns from areas on either side of them and allowing for unique and oddly conflicting environments to exist in relative proximity.

Jungles

The jungles are deep, dense and dark. Three hundred square miles of Boreas jungle holds more Biodiversity than the entire Gilnares system. The Gorgol  also make their homes here, building large cities around and within the enormous trees there.    This environment is as vast as it is impenetrable and amount to some of the least explored areas on Boreas.

Forests

The forest of Boreas are sprawling, untouched and verdant.  The Eweoesemost often make their homes here, travelling in nomadic groups following migrations of prey animals.    These forests run from sweeping tangles of swampy mangroves near the coasts to hundreds of miles of Oak or Redwood trees and many more. The type of forest largely depends on the latitude of its location.

Oceans

If the Mountains of Boreas are vast, the oceans are all that much more so and more terrifying. No-one knows the depths that they reach or the creatures who plumb those depths. All that is known is that to venture far from the shore is to court death.    There are few seafaring cultures that arose on Boreas, though there are some that exist. They are mostly mixed species cultures whose seafaring arose from need rather than desire.

Savannah

Sweeping savannah cover much of the northern and southern equatorial regions, oceans of arid grass with water buried deep underground or in distant watering holes. , the Maradspend much of their time wandering these areas following vast herds of prey animals.

Steppes

Oceans of grass cover large parts of the northern hemisphere where enormous herds of deer, mammoth and other fauna wander in a neverending migration. Few species call this place home naturally but several mixed cultures have rose on the steppes to wander its vastness.

Ecosystem

The environment of Boreas is one of extremes. Extreme climate, storms, growth...everything upon this planet is dialed to the max.

Climate

The climate of the world is stable with regional extremes that help give the planet its reputation for hostility.

Fauna & Flora

On Boreas, Megafauna stalk the land in various forms from enormous mammals to Dinosaurs with niches being filled at all levels by creatures of all sizes and shapes.

Natural Resources

Boreas is incredibly resource rich and there are hundreds of nations and corporations that would love to extract that wealth.    The environment and denizens of the planet have proven to be nearly insurmountable in that regard.
