Velen Primer

The World of Velen

The Velen are many gods, ten to be precise, the each has its own personality and responsibility in the world.  The strongest of these is Soreithra, the goddess of fire, She embodies passion, warmth, and rage. She is not a merciful goddess, and she doesn't like it when people misuse, overuse, or abuse her fires, which means that melting metals with higher melting points is a very difficult task in this world. It is because of this that the world is eternally stuck in the bronze age, as copper and tin are the only two metals that are both common and easily meltable.

The Forsaken

The three Forsaken are the darker gods of this world, wether they are good or evil depends on who you ask, although among the Velen, and their followers, it is commonly agreed upon that they are generally not nice. They were driven into the deep corners of the world long ago by the Velen during the war of the wayfarers, but that doesn't mean they'll sit on their hands while the Velen are free to do as they please.

Aetherium

Dead gods, for good or for bad, influence the world as much as the living ones, as killing a god doesn't just delete their energy from existence, and they still have the power to change the world.

Magic

All of the live gods emit ambient energy into the world, which the knowledgeable can use to cast spells. Those who do so with care and skill will live a long life of power and influence, however, those who are careless will not live to use this ability for long.

Inspirations

My primary inspirations for this world are our own worlds history, and many of the gods are based on real-world equivalents, which may or may not be obvious from the name I chose to give them.

The map for this world is based on the real one, I simply changed the water level a bit. Many landmasses are what they looked like during the previous ice age, and some of them are simply landmasses that in our world are too far below the surface of the ocean to be visible on maps.
As for Antarctica, I have always found the idea of a habitable Antarctica fascinating and wanted to include it in this project.

For the nations, I also like history, and alternate history stuff, so many of these will be reimagined historically real nations or peoples that lived in that area, others are just figments of my imagination or combinations of multiple nations or peoples that have inhabited the area over the last few thousand years.
