Deiwos in The World of Velen | World Anvil

Deiwos

The God of the Sky

Deiwos is the second most powerful, and the most popular of the gods. He is in charge of keeping the heavens in order. He makes it rain, and he helps keep the sun in its proper place, as the sun is the stallion on which he rides across the sky during his daily patrols of the world. Storms are said to come when he is displeased, and thunder and lightning, his shouts of chastisement. Besides the sky and the weather, he is also associated with law, order, and justice.

Temples

In order to please the god of the blue sky, people make offerings to him. These offerings can be anything that has value of some kind, like food, or some home made craft, a symbol of your effort and dedication. These offerings are brought to his shrine, which can always be found at one of the temples built in his honour, always built in places of high elevation, in order to be closest to him. He has by far the most temples dedicated to him, and the largest.   Deiwos is said to have made all the clouds, and that their shapes are messages for the people of the world, which is why to monks, who live at his temples, spend much of their time trying to read these clouds, attempting to decipher this divine language. Besides cloud reading these monks will also spend much of their time meditating and fasting, both intended to bring them focus and understanding.

Artifacts

Deiwos' first gift to the world is the Looking glass. It is a bronze and gold tube, with one wide end, and one narrow, both with crystals set in them. Not only does it allow you to see great distances, but it also allows you to see things that are much smaller than would normally be visible with the naked eye. Its power is that of sight, and you have to be careful what you look at, for if you look at something that is too bright, it may burn your eyes.   The second, and most powerful of his gifts is The third eye. It is a silver circlet simple but ornate in design, within the front, a circular gem, like an eye, white on the outside, with a bright blue iris, the depth and complexity rivales that of the blue sky, and even the deep ocean. It is the circlet of insight, a gift granted for the sake of seeing that which can't be seen. It allows the wearer to tune into the intentions of others, to detect lies and deceit. This makes this an invaluable tool for any monarch looking to bring justice too all criminals in their realm, even those who would hide behind a shield of falsehoods. Besides this, it also grants the ability to predict the weather up to a few days in advance, with relative accuracy. However, The use of this powerful tool doesn't come without warning, as using it too much and too trivially, may warp the mind, as seeing into the thoughts of others too much, may corrupt your own brain, which can cause headaches, paranoia, dementia, as well as confusing the thoughts of other with your own.

Personality

The great father of the skies, he is strong and commands an air of strength, he values justice, order within chaos, and the finding of the truth. He, from high above the world, watches on as time unfolds, distributing rain to those who deserve it the most, and blowing wind wherever he can reach, all in the name of balance and righteousness.

Divine Relations

Deiwos, as one of The Founders of this world, was friends with most of its members, but he was especially close with Soreithra, the with whom he orchestrated many of the greater workings of this world. They were always great friends, and they ruled the Velen as the two most powerful members. Over time, of course the wayfarers arrived, each doing their best to blend into this world, and Deiwos tolerated them all equally. But one day, a goddess named Luminara came wondering out of the void. She was just a wayfarer, and Deiwos didn't think much of her at first, but quickly he realized she was different, and both he and Soreithra embraced her friendship, and as she was nearly as powerful as either of them, they took her into their inner council.  During this time, Deiwos spent a lot of time with Luminara, simply tending the sky together, scheming up new ideas and inventing constructs to make the world a better place. One day, Limunara came up with an idea to rival all others, the idea to create a new divine entity of light, to ride the sky, to bring night and day automatically, something they had been doing by hand until now. Deiwos thought it was a great idea, and they started devising a method of how to do such a thing, Deiwos suggested they should involve Soreithra somehow, because recently, he had sensed Soreithra feeling left out, and he knew how volatile she could be, but Luminara insisted this was their creation, something only they could do, and Deiwos said he needed to think about it. But shortly after, when Deiwos was slumbering in the heavens, Luminara did it anyway, she devised a new entity from amongst their two energy sources and named it the sun. When Deiwos awoke and realized what had happened, he was quite mad at her, but she insisted it had been a mutual decision. Deiwos was mad, but mostly, he was worried, and rightfully so, because when Soreithra found out what had happened, she confronted Luminara about it, and in this confrontation, she struck Luminara dead. She then rushed to Deiwos in a rage, and demanded the death of this so-called Sun, their misbegotten offspring. Deiwos managed to calm her, but the damage had been done. Luminara had been a most popular goddess, and now, some of her friends were starting a revolt against the two of them, and they would have to stand firmly together once more.
