Smiling Jack has been sailing under Dreadful Bill for bout 8 years now, but when he first started Bill refused to give Jack a piece of loot from his first quest. Bill said it was because Jack joined the crew the day after they started planning so he wasn't there for the entire quest and therefore did not have a claim on the loot. Jack has always seen this as a betrayal and vowed to one day overthrow Bill as the captain.
