Merterra (Continent)

From the endless plains of the east to the dense Dark Forest to the top of the highest mountain, the continent of Merterra is home to myriad geographical regions and the many species who inhabit them.

Geography

This large island continent is home to many different types of terrain. A large mountain range splits the continent almost exactly in half from north to south. To the west is the area known as the Dark Forest . This forested region is run through with many rivers and marshy, swampy areas. The east is more hospitable in that it is mostly filled with grasslands and other plains. This half of the continent is also entirely under the control of The Kingdom of Merterra . The full coastline of Merterra is composed of sandy beaches. To the southeast of the main landmass is a grouping of small islands, each only a few miles across. Most of these islands are relatively flat and have been almost completely converted to farmland by the Merterrans. There are also a few other small islands near the other coasts of the continent. The coastline is home to a few small coral reefs, but there are also plenty of natural ports which the Merterrans use for trade and transport. For the most part, the ocean is clear and beautiful, though some areas are very deep and consequentially are unmapped and mysterious.

Natural Resources

The wide grassy plains of east Merterra grow in rich soil, perfect for growing various grains. In fact, the only populated areas that do not take advantage of this soil are the ones that are either too close to the mountains or the ones on the coast. The coastlines of the continent sport sandy beaches and many natural ports. The sea is also full of fish, providing food for the local Merfolk and the possibility of a strong fishing industry. The mountains running across the continent are full of coal and many non-precious metals such as iron, copper, and nickel. The western forested regions of Merterra are obviously full of trees which could be harvested for lumber, but there are also many other plants in the region which possess healing or magical properties.
