The Adyrian Republics

Founded in 1649, the Adyrian Republics are a coalition compromised of various city-states and their holdings from the geographical region known as Adyr. While cultural aspects vary between individual cities and their holdings, the Adyrian Republics can overall be defined as a mercantile republic and more meritocratic in nature than many other nations. At the top of society are the most powerful and influential of noble houses found within the Republics - practically all of these find their origins in, and indeed still are, merchant families. As a result, one's bloodline and origins are of little matter if one seeks to rise to the top of Adyrian society, although it is far easier for those born into wealth - at the same time, one's ancestry only goes so far in preserving an individual's social status, and many noble families have risen and fallen in remarkably short spans of time throughout the Republics' history. Laws within the Adyrian Republics vary on a city-by-city case, but the overlapping laws of the Republics themselves, as well as the Republics' foreign policy, are formed by a council made up of members of every individual state that is a part of the Republics. The amount of seats that a state gets on this council is determined by their size, wealth, and contributions to the Republics, resulting in a few of the more prominent cities effectively deciding the Republics' overall course.
