Helhound
Helhounds were born from Fenrir, the brother of Hella, goddess of Death. Fenrir's children are powerful, undead creatures that have access to cold arcana and work as guards in Helheim, Realm of the Damned.
Basic Information
Anatomy
They have the average appearance of a wolf, but at a larger size. The average helhound stands at 6'7" (2.0066 m), almost half of Fenrir's size. They are overly muscular in size, as their fur remains puffed up, like they are on edge.
Genetics and Reproduction
A helhound can always reproduce by finding another helhound mate. In rare circumstances, a helhound can mate with a full-blooded wolf, though their pups won't have a helhound's icy powers. This is how dire wolves were born.
Ecology and Habitats
Hot and humid climates weaken a helhound, driving it exhaustion. When in colder climates, the helhound thrives, drawing upon the cold air to charge their abilities before a battle. When in their natural habitat— Helheim — a helhound is at their strongest, with their cold based attacks doubling in damage against those that are weak to cold damage.
Dietary Needs and Habits
Helhounds are carnivores that need to eat meat every few days. If they do longer than week without eating meat, a helhound grows weak and is unable to use their special abilities. A substitute to meat are ice berries.
Additional Information
Domestication
All helhounds are born in Helheim. Once born, they are trained to be warriors for Hella's undead army. When the time is right, Hella has a pup placed with someone she deems worthy. The new "owner" must continue to train the pup as a warrior. With the Udøde, Hella gave Azalea Hanabira a helhound warrior named Stian, who recently lost his last "owner".
Unable to resist Stian's cuteness, Azalea trained him as a a typical dog. As people joined her group, they grew to see Stian as a family member. Azalea came across a Hel-Walker and used one of its bones to make a dog whistle. She took it to Hel's Gate and has Hella bless the whistle. By using the whistle, Azalea can call Stian from anywhere in the world as a portal opens and Stian hops out next to her. Stian also knows basic commands and is known to appear to get large, yet dangerous groups of humans to surrender.
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
Their fur radiates a chilly coldness that freezes the ground the helhound walks upon. Frosty puffs of air leave their mouth, hinting at an icy breath weapon. When a helhound bites someone, the bite inflicts a chill on the person, and perhaps causing them to get frostburn.
