Lady Sanguine

Written by StillnessandSilence

(a.k.a. Witch Queen)

Lady Sanguine, the Witch Queen of the Veil, Captain of The Crowe, and leader of the Blood Drinkers, remains an enigma to all who cross her path. Born to Amelia and Hadrian Voss of Portcross, her story is as dark and tumultuous as the seas she commands. Hadrian, a slaver under contract to King Oren of Sorrow’s End, was a greedy man ruled by his lustful heart. When she was just eight years old, he cast her overboard into the Sea of Veil, all to appease a new mistress who could not abide the presence of children.

But she didn’t die.

She drifted into the depths, caught in a state between life and death, where she encountered The Sunken. Suspended in the abyss, she was no longer the daughter of Hadrian Voss but a frail, terrified child fighting for survival. The ancient being loomed before her, its voice a rumble that seemed to shake the ocean itself. Yet, even in her weakness, it saw something in her—pain, vengeance, and a spark of life that refused to be extinguished.

“I will let you live,” the voice resonated through her small, trembling form, “and grant you powers beyond your own belief. You will grow as my child, act as my will.”

A vision unfurled in her mind—a glimpse of what she could become. Powerful, beautiful, deadly. But there was a price. She felt the weight of his offer, an unspoken warning carried in the crushing grip of his presence. What could a god possibly want from a child?

“I could kill your father right now,” he rumbled, his tone sharpening like a blade. “It would be easy. He pollutes my seas with his filth!” His eyes burned a fiery red, and the water around her seemed to tighten, squeezing her legs as if to drag her down. She gasped, fear and fury swirling inside her.

“I want to kill him,” she whispered, her voice trembling but filled with a raw, unyielding rage. It caught his attention, the fiery gaze narrowing upon her.

“The price?” she squeaked, her small voice barely audible over the crushing pressure of the abyss.

“Your name,” he rumbled, his grip tightening further as if to hasten her demise. The choice was clear: surrender her name or sink into oblivion.

She struggled, flailing her arms as the reality of death loomed closer. Her name was nothing—just a tether to a life that had abandoned her. She could become something new, something more.

And so, with her name stripped away, she became his servant. The child that Hadrian Voss had cast into the sea did not die, but something far more powerful was born in her place: Lady Sanguine, forged in the abyss and bound by vengeance. Raised by the cutthroats of Cindorria after washing ashore, the Lady Nox saw the marks of The Sunken etched into her skin. It was then that Julius Cor Diabolus, the ruling Pirate King of Saltwood Castle, took her in.

From him, she learned early that to survive, she must be cruel and wicked. As she grew, so too did her control over the seas, the blood of The Sunken humming within her veins. Even Julius, a being of immense power, feared her.

Gifted with her first ship, the Fiore, Lady Sanguine began a relentless assault on the slavers of Portcross, striking fear into their hearts. She was the first to fight back, and soon, the name Witch Queen echoed across the Sea of Veil and the Islands. No longer would she allow Portcross to take from the seas with impunity.

Slowly, meticulously, Lady Sanguine began to close in on her father, Hadrian Voss, planning a brutal revenge for his betrayal—casting her into the depths of the Sea of Veil all those years ago. Her chance came when she captured her father's ship, The Black Revenant, near the shores of Asharia. The battle that followed was brutal, their blades clashing in a shower of sparks. The crew of The Black Revenant stood by, resigned to their fates, watching as the two fought atop the deck. Neither gave quarter, neither yielded. It was a clash of blood and fury, a reckoning long overdue.

Sanguine prevailed. With a final, fatal blow to Hadrian’s abdomen, his guts spilled across the deck, a grotesque spray of blood staining the wood. She did not weep. Without hesitation, she drew a black dagger from her belt and carved his heart from his chest. The crew watched in eerie silence, none daring to intervene as she completed her dark deed.

The heart still bled in her hand, warm and pulsing. She gave a curt nod to Lady Nox, who, without a word, leapt over the side of the ship and disappeared into the depths below, swallowed by the darkness. Sanguine stood still for a moment, the weight of the heart in her grip grounding her in the moment.

Then, without a sound, she sank into the blackness herself. Weightless, the cold ocean embraced her, the heart still beating in her hand as though it were alive, its pulse echoing in the endless dark. And then, as if summoned by her thoughts, two large globes of light appeared before her, glowing faintly in the oppressive void. The ocean whispered its secrets to her, and in that moment, she knew the price of vengeance had been paid.

She had earned a token of The Sunken's favor, and with it, the heart of her father was used to weave a powerful ward around Cindorria, binding the island in a protective shroud. No force would dare threaten it again. With the heart still pulsing in her grip, she knew her power had grown immeasurably. She now continued to enact the God’s will, commanding all of Cindorria with ruthless authority.

Julius Cor Diabolus, the Pirate King of Saltwood Castle, knew better than most the cost of crossing her. He understood that having her as an ally was far preferable to becoming part of the Sunken’s depths. The sea was vast, and the depths could consume anyone foolish enough to challenge her. Instead, he bent to her power, accepting that Lady Sanguine was a force to be reckoned with, and one whose favor was not easily won but eternally feared.

With every passing day, her grip on the islands and the seas grew stronger. And as she steered Cindorria into a new era, the world began to recognize her not only as the Witch Queen of the Veil, but as a living testament to the vengeance of The Sunken—a queen of blood, wrath, and the deep, unyielding power of the ocean’s darkest heart.

Baresh Sturmen, a moment of weakness for Sanguine. The vampire overwhelmed her with food so delicious, it made her forget. Whether it was driven by need or lust, no one could say. What is known, however, is that Baresh was bitten by Sanguine that night. Since then, the vampire’s cravings have grown—almost as insatiable as his thirst for blood. Now, he hungers not just for life, but for power, drawn irresistibly to the magical essence of others, unable to resist the pull of it. [see Satin her first meeting with him]

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Lady Sanguine is an athletic, striking figure with a heart-shaped face, dark raven hair, and sunkissed skin, known for her sharp yet feminine beauty. Her dark brown eyes are disarming, holding an intensity that contrasts her graceful appearance. Subtle tattoos, marks of the Sunken, trace her skin, symbols of the power she commands. A hard-working leader, she maintains her strength through discipline, never asking her crew to do what she wouldn’t. Whether blending in with others or commanding as the Queen of the Veil, she carries herself with quiet authority and lethal elegance.

Special abilities

Lady Sanguine wields absolute command over the sea, able to summon fierce storms, massive waves, and bend the waters to her will. In moments of dire need, she can call upon the Sunken himself, becoming a living conduit for his dark powers. As an avatar of the god, her very presence is a manifestation of his wrath and dominion, and when she unleashes his power, it is as though the depths themselves rise to answer her call. Her mastery over the ocean is unparalleled, and with it, she commands the fear and respect of all who sail its waters.

Apparel & Accessories

Lady Sanguine dresses in the regal attire befitting her rank as Pirate Queen, often clad in crimson or black, her garments a blend of elegance and menace. She wears a black tricorne hat adorned with a large white plume, a symbol of her dominance on the seas. Her attire is both practical and striking, designed for battle yet refined, with subtle markings that hint at her allegiance to House Cor Diabolous. These marks, often hidden beneath her clothes, are a silent reminder of the power she commands.

Mental characteristics

Failures & Embarrassments

In her early days, Lady Sanguine had to learn many hard lessons—each one a reminder of her imperfection and the price of unchecked power. Her growing abilities over the sea were vast and frightening, and though she had inherited them through her pact with The Sunken, they were far from easily controlled. Early on, she wrecked the harbor more than once, her emotions unleashing tempests and storms that destroyed ships, tore down docks, and left the islanders scrambling in fear. Each outburst, though fueled by her rage and hunger for vengeance, reminded her just how fragile her control over the sea was, and how easily her fury could turn against her.

Her emotions, untamed and violent, often led to mishaps that were beyond her control. In moments of anger or sorrow, the sea would lash out with her. She had once unintentionally caused a whirlpool that swallowed an entire fleet of ships after a particularly bitter argument with Julius. Though Julius had scolded her sharply, the lesson was clear: Emotion must be controlled, or it will destroy everything you build. It was a lesson that took time for her to learn, and one that she would never forget. Her powers, when used recklessly, could not only harm her enemies but those who followed her as well.

Perhaps the most difficult lesson came when Julius, having watched her clash with rival pirate lords, finally pulled her aside and spoke of the balance between fear and respect. "You cannot lead with fear alone," he said, his voice stern but patient. "Fear will break those who serve you. It will make them tremble before you, yes, but it will not make them loyal. True loyalty is earned with more than blood—it is earned with wisdom, with patience, and with diplomacy."

At first, Sanguine struggled with this idea. The idea of offering something beyond threats and violence felt alien to her. But as time passed and she watched Julius skillfully navigate dangerous negotiations, slowly twisting foes into allies, she began to understand. Diplomacy, when wielded correctly, could offer much more than the sheer terror she’d once relied on. It wasn’t about making enemies cower; it was about understanding the value of alliances and recognizing when the cost of blood was not worth the price.

She had learned to choose her battles more wisely. Not every conflict required a blood-soaked deck, not every island needed to be raided for its riches. She learned to wield her words as deftly as she wielded her blade, using diplomacy when it was an option, and when to strike with calculated precision.

Each lesson, painful and humbling, forged her into a leader who commanded not just fear, but respect. It was the price of power, and Lady Sanguine, through her failures and triumphs, learned how to walk the razor's edge between destruction and diplomacy—becoming not just a force of nature, but a queen in her own right.
