Magnus Quinn

Written by StillnessandSilence

Admiral (a.k.a. Loathsome Curr. Sea Devil)

Magnus Quinn was a formidable man in his own right. Unlike most in the royal navy of Stormer, he had earned his position through grit and determination, not nepotism. His tenacity for command was undeniable. Born in Thunderglade's sailors' district to a father who was a seasoned mariner and a mother with the fiery spirit of the Veil islands, it was said that the sea ran in his veins.   From a young age, Magnus dedicated himself to the navy, climbing the ranks with sheer effort. Unlike his peers, he had little time for the casual dalliances that distracted so many. His one true love was the sea. He proved his worth in a deadly clash with the Portcross Navy along the coastline, a battle that would solidify his reputation.   The orders for that engagement had been clear: assist the Witch Queen of Veil in her desperate bid to stop the relentless raids that had bled the islands dry. The mere thought of aiding her had riled every fiber of Magnus’s being. To him, she was a foul, demon-like wench wielding powers no mortal should possess. Yet, for all her unnerving abilities, she was undeniably effective   Magnus stood on the deck of his ship, the HMS Hellion, a name bestowed by the king with a touch of affection. The sea churned fiercely, waves crashing against the hull as he barked out orders. “Fire again!” he roared, bracing himself against the next aftershock of cannon fire. The Hellion had been expertly positioned to the port side of the Portcross ship known as The Viper, one of their deadliest vessels. The Portcross fleet was unmistakable, their sails dyed a steely gray that blended with the stormy skies. The Hellion’s cannons hit their mark, and Magnus signaled to the Siren’s Call, captained by Baresh Sturmen of House Swiftgust, to open fire in support. Just as the battle raged on, his eyes caught movement on the horizon—the crimson sails of the Crowe.   There she was, standing proudly on the deck of her ship. Her black hair whipped in the wind, crowned by a striking white plume that marked her as a queen in more ways than one. Her gaze was commanding, her every movement deliberate as she readied her own cannons. The Viper—already a formidable opponent—seemed almost emboldened under her leadership. Her crew followed her with effortless precision, as if bewitched by her presence.   A thunderous explosion yanked Magnus back to the present as the battle raged on. By the end of that day, he had sunk The Viper, The Aisen, and The Belldandy, securing a decisive victory. Yet, despite the triumph, he couldn’t shake the image of the Witch Queen—her defiant figure etched into his mind like a scar.   He had been promoted to admiral after that fateful battle, a victory that came to be known as The Hellion’s Blaze. The campaign had stemmed some of the bleeding from the islands, though it was far from a lasting solution.   Not long after, Magnus received an unexpected gift from the Witch Queen herself. Delivered in a black velvet box, it contained an uncut bloodstone that gleamed with a deep, unsettling crimson. A small card accompanied it, made of fine black parchment with gold ink that read simply:   "Thank you. Lady Sanguine."   Magnus stared at the gift for a long while, unsure what to make of it—or what to do with it.

Physical Description

Apparel & Accessories

Magnus wears the crisp uniform of a Royal Navy admiral in Stormer’s fleet, the striking navy blue and silver accentuating his ruggedly handsome figure. His black polished boots and gloves complete the look, and on occasion, he dons a bicorne when duty calls for it. Beneath his starched collar, a dark steel chain necklace rests, though no one has ever seen what lies at the end of it.

Failures & Embarrassments

One of the most embarrassing moments of Magnus’s youth occurred during a sparring match on the Sparrow. At the time, he was skilled with a sword but perhaps a bit too confident in his abilities. He was younger then, eager to prove himself. His opponent was Drake Swiftgust, a seasoned sailor who was just slightly older but far more experienced.   They danced across the ship's deck, the creaking of the boards beneath their feet blending with the salty air and the calls of the gulls overhead. The rigging sang with the wind, adding a rhythmic tension to the match. For a while, it was an evenly matched contest, with both of them testing each other's strength and precision.   But in a moment of overconfidence, Magnus overextended himself, leaving himself wide open. In a flash, Drake took advantage, knocking him flat onto the deck with a clean strike. The laughter of the watching crew echoed in his ears as he lay there, stunned and humiliated.   That moment stuck with Magnus, and he vowed never again to let pride cloud his focus. He knew that humility, just as much as strength, would be essential to his future success.

Personality Characteristics

Vices & Personality flaws

Magnus has a particular fondness for bourbon, which has become his vice over the years. He keeps a robust collection, savoring it in moments of solitude. However, much like the stormy seas, his temper is quick to flare. It’s often described as the "Sea's Devil," a force of nature that strikes without warning. He has little patience for ignorance and even less for those who fail to meet his standards.
