Rumors are carried by haters, spread by fools, and accepted by idiots.
In such a small valley, disinformation will spread just as fast as information. And even that which is taboo to speak about becomes quiet talk.
Throughout these articles and when travelling this world, you will read and hear all sorts of claims to fact. But don't believe it all.
Subtle Rumors
When reading the articles, you may discover subtle inaccuracies in what is written, compared to what you encounter. This is because articles in this world are written as the public best knows and understands the given topic.
For example:
- In one article it might state: "Alex travelled south to the town of Natial to avoid the worst of the cold winter."
- But in another article you might notice: "Alex arrived in Natial on September 8th" which you may realize is after winter ends.
Or perhaps
- One article describes Alex is viewed as a harsh and uncaring leader.
- But another might state he approved laws in his city to better distribute crops to the people. Perhaps indicating he means well? Or perhaps he has a hidden agenda?
The line can be blurry between what is known fact and what is a rumor, hence they are called "subtle rumors."
Explicit Rumors
Though not all rumors are subtle, so some articles will explicitly write out under a section labeled "Rumors". It is here you will find a list of rumors about the article, often in direct contradiction. These explicit rumors will generally be more publically known, and when creating a character for a campaign, you may want to consider what of these rumors you character knows, which ones they don't know, and how they came to know them.
Here is an example of an explicit rumor, and some varied beliefs on what happened:
- "The boy cried out there was a wolf, but there was none, he just wanted attention."
- "The girl made a wolf outfit, and was upset when no one gave her attention over the outfit she made."
- "A man known as 'The Wolf' killed the boy"
- "The town is using boys as live bait to capture animals"
As you can see, these rumors may vary greatly. Perhaps one of them is the truth. Perhaps they are all wrong. Perhaps all of them have some of the truth, but none wholly accurate.
