Arcane Academies

Arcane Academies, commonly referred to simply as Academies, are magical society's institutions of learning.   With magical society being ultimately founded on the furthering of arcane knowledge and the study of spellcrafting and its various applications for the benefit of humankind and individuals, the Academies outgrew their role of simple schools and became seats of political power. Its Chancelleries are extremely coveted and can give the Chancellor and its sympathizers great sway over the administrative region covered by its academy. As a measure to mitigate the infighting within the Council only individuals ranked Trismegistus, the highest existing rank in the Arcanum, can be nominated Chancellors.   Despite the founding of the academies by the Council, many practitioners still embrace individual mentorship as the best way to pass down the arcane knowledge.

Notable Academies

the Great Three

The Great Three are the most influential academies today. They are:
  • New Thinis Arcane Academy, know for its coat of arms as the Ibis Academy, in New Thinis. Currently considered the head of the Great Three, it is located in the same city as the Council's headquarters. The Ibis Academy is known to foster its alumni into taking very active roles in society, with many of the Council's Senators having attended to it. This makes it the perfect place for politically ambitious students, but also makes it known for its intense power play and unwelcoming elitist culture;
  • Redmayne Hermetic Academy, known as the Red Academy, in Kingsport. Undoubtedly the greatest academy in the New World the Red Academy was first conceived as a means for the Council to consolidate its hold in the Americas. Currently led by a middle-of-the-road Chancellor, the academy is heavily influenced by New World mages' culture, tempered by the Lost Coast's known troubles with magical beasts. Students are taught the protection of the Veil as the single most precious thing, and are encouraged to become Protectors - even if pointed towards the Aurum Solis instead of the Protectorate;
  • the Promethean Gardens in the city of Promethea is the smallest of the Great Three, smaller than many academiesoutside the trio, but also the oldest. Almost a century before the Cairo Concordat was signed the Gardens were already a gathering place for practitioners seeking guidance, improvement and the company of equals. It was formalized as an Academy a couple of decades after the foundation of the Ibis Academy, but much for the distaste of more radical Council advocates it is common knowledge that the Gardens were the house of arcane learning way before the signatories even dreamt of the refoundation of magical society. The Gardens have seen better days, but their responsibility over the Atheneum of Ys safeguards its post among the Great Three. Following its founder, the academy holds the pursuit of knowledge and individual development of its students above all others. It is fertile ground for those passionate for the pure study of magic, but its gentle guidance might engender passivity in less passionate practitioners.

Others

Not only the Great Three are held in high regard by the Council. Many others are of renown for their excellence, strategic importance and influence. Following are a few:
  • Arcane School of Hermannstadt, formerly known as Scholomance, in Old Hermannstad. The academy is located within the Transylvanian Fold, a fold long thought to have disappeared along with the original Scholomance. The castle that used to be home to the Scholomance was renewed and reopened as the Arcane School of Hermannstadt, with the chancellorship being seized by Augustine Zulfir, an eidolurgist, in a bold political move involving the entrance to the fold, an old stone archway, being located within her family's property. The academy is openly welcoming of practitioners following magical schools that are usually shunned by the Council, some of whom would even be labeled as heresiarchs. This has given the academy a surge of fame (or infamy) in the recent years, as more and more deviant practitioners sought it as a refuge from the Council's unwelcoming tendencies.
  • Penglai School, known as the Jade Academy, in Nakajima. It was recognized as an Academy by the Council as an act of diplomacy with the many established arcane leaderships in East Asia - some of which were even present at the signing of the Cairo Concordat -, but it's outside Council control. It is considered a cultural exchange hub for several different eastern traditions of magic, but mainly dominated by practitioners of fangshi and shugendo;
  • Parime Arcane Academy in Lake Parime, the biggest academy in South America.
