Kingsport

One of the first havens founded after the Taking of the Lost Coast, Kingsport is a town of strategic importance in the New World. It's the largest port in the Lost Coast, serving as an entrepot between the ocean and the capital city of Arkham, the Lost Coast's distribution center. It also houses Redmayne Hermetic Academy, the largest and most important Academy in the New World.   Despite its many strategic strengths, Kingsport's centrality is routinely undermined by the political disputes between the the Council and New World mages. While the balance of power shifts frequently between the two havens, Arkham is more often the seat of power of the Lost Coast.

Geography

Located in the Miskatonic Fold, Kingsport Bay faces east between a curved headland and the mainland, just west of the Miskatonic River estuary.   The town starts at the tip of the headland, with the New Lighthouse, continuing north and around the bay over a series of hillocks. Roughly in the middle of town rises is Central Hill, the tallest of the hills. Its north face is the center of nightlife, mostly frequented by academy alumni.   Continuing north is the region known as the Hollow, located between Central Hill and two smaller hills, which is bissected by the Royal Creek, a small creek that carries run-off water that comes down when the mists hit the King's Head all over the year.   The beach ends as the coastline reaches the mainland, sloping up to a series of rocky cliffs leading to the King's Head, a steep peak and landmark of the town. The King's Head can be seen from miles away, rising skywards out of the misty shore. The Old Lighthouse is still there, albeit deactivated.

Population

Kingsport is a busy town. In addition to its residents and seasonal port workers, it is mostly occupied by students attending the Red Academy. The city also houses the second largest Council Office, being an administrative center for Covens and other Council activities.

Economic Activity

The city of Kingsport mainly operates around its port activity, serving as an entrepot between the ocean and Arkham. Merchandise arrives from the ocean via ship and is transfered to riverboats to be sent up the Arkham Distribution Facility. Fishing is also profitable, but the city only exchanges commodities locally.   The Red Academy also produces several Covens, but they are not a reliable source of income. Apart from the fact that profits rely on the individual productivity of each Coven, most Covens leave the city as soon as its members graduate for better opportunities.

Political Disputes

Kingsport and its neighbour Arkham mimic the competition of the New and the Old Worlds. Finding it difficult to stake their claim in Arkham - considered the capital of the Lost Coast -, Council leadership decided to cease their attempts to confront the political strength of New World separatists directly. Instead, to consolidate their power over the New World, the Council enlisted Magister Tobias Redmayne and a group of New World mages disillusioned with how their peers were conducting politics in the Lost Coast to create the Redmayne Arcane Academy, today known as the Red Academy. With that, the recently founded Miskatonic University in Arkham, despite its wealth and competent professors, found it increasingly difficult to compete with the academic resources provided to the Redmayne Academy by the Old World. As the years passed, it saw the number of attending students diminish until it became unsustainable to remain in activity. As diplomatic relations between the Old and the New World progressed from outright animosity to subtle antagonism, the Miskatonic Academy was eventually closed, and the Red Academy became the academic seat of the Lost Coast.   As long as Arkham remains the largest town in the Lost Coast and its political center, a stalemate is sustained between the two cities due to the importance the Redmayne Arcane Academy confers to Kingsport.
