Aeryon

Aeryon is a coastal kingdom situated on the south-eastern edge of the Borrovyan continent, which thrives on trade and fishing with most of its big cities situated along the coast.

History

Following the Ballet of Scales the region that would become Aeryon was in a state of complete disarray. From the chaos, a kingdom was formed. This, however, was not the Aeryonian kingdom. It was a kingdom lead by a king who built a mythos around himself that lifted him into godhood. This ancient kingdom grew quickly in power thanks to the many knightly orders that sprung up within it. With this immense military might, it did not take long before this kingdom began its crusades to conquer all neighboring kingdoms and nations. Soon they had taken control of the entire southeastern coastline, but they were stopped by the Conerica River by the unyielding force of the Scaelorian Dragonknights. To the north and further west, however, they managed to conquer most of the land north of the Allerdale Mountains lead by the knightly order known as the Guardians of the Helots.   With the bulk of the kingdom's forces engaged in foreign conflicts and conquests, the so-called god-king didn't stand a chance against an armed uprising from the wealthy tradesmen, bankers, and craftsmen. After a successful siege on the king's castle, he and his family were hung along the docks of Zarasil. The thirteen richest among them, who had lead the assault, formed a council that would henceforth choose their king. So was Aeryon formed. The territories that the knightly orders had conquered were abandoned.

Structure

The kingdom of Aeryon is an elective monarchy where the king is elected upon the previous’ death. Those eligible for election are only those within the closed-off aristocracy who make up the second legislative body known as the Lunate Council, which consists of the 13 most powerful families in the nation. Each of these, upon the king's death, are eligible to propose one candidate who can’t be a member of one of these thirteen families, a somewhat failed attempt to avoid corruption. Each family then has one vote to lay on any one of the candidates. If there is a tie, then a new vote is held between just the two remaining candidates. The families in question are the leaders of the thirteen richest guilds in Zarastil, whose influence reaches throughout the nation. These are the:
  • Banking Clan
  • Carpenters', Roofers', & Plaisterers' Guild
  • Council of Farmer-Grocers
  • Council of Musicians, Instrument-Makers, & Choristers
  • Fishmongers Fellowship
  • Guild of Apothecaries and Physicians
  • Master Mariners Guild
  • Most Careful Order of Skilled Smiths and Metalforgers
  • Order of Master Shipwrights
  • Scriveners', Scribes', and Clerks' Guild
  • Solemn Order of Recognized Furriers and Woolmen
  • Splendid Order of Armorers, Locksmiths, and Finesmiths
  • Watchful Order of Magists and Protectors
Within the borders of the nation, the King of Aeryon holds supreme judicial power. Like most feudal states he then distributes this power among his vassals, who in turn distribute it further among lesser lords. This decentralized system of government has lead to the aristocracy taking control of most of the judicial power in Aeryon. This is however somewhat kept in check by an organization known as the Stellar Servants. These individuals serve directly under the king and travel throughout the nation to make sure that they indeed enforce the king's laws. These individuals command an immense amount of respect and authority. Despite many attempts by the aristocracy to corrupt this organization, they remain unyieldingly loyal to the crown.

Military

Even though Aeryon's armed forces no longer possess the power and prestige of the knightly orders of the past, they are nevertheless powerful organizations. They are divided into the Aeryonian Cavalry, the Phalanx, and the Moon Blades, who specialize in subterfuge and urban combat and serve directly under the king. The most notorious, however, is the Royal Navy and are commanded by High Strategos Maxillar Pythareus. The Royal Navy is by all accounts considered the most powerful naval force on the Borrovyan continent.   The day-to-day order is kept by the order known as the Folksguard. An order that operates all throughout Aeryon and is under the divided control of both the king and the Lunate Council.

Trade & Transport

The lifeblood of the Aeryonian people comes from the ocean. The entire nation is directly dependent on fishing and trade. Aeryonian waters have always been considered some of the richest in the world, much due to the residual magic still present from the time of the alghollthus empire. This dependence on the sea has lead to a reverence of the moon, which controls the tides.
