Sa'resteece

The mysterious magocratic nation of Sa'resteece is a relatively new nation. It was founded in the wake of a conflict that took down the necromancer that ruled the area in the centuries leading up to its founding. Their one and only goal is their endless pursuit of magical knowledge. This pursuit is fueled by the several large magical institutions that together form the backbone of the Sa'restian society.

History

The city-states that make up the nation of Sa'restece were founded in wake of the dragon kingdoms left by the Age of Dragons. Due to the ancient history that even predated their rule with the Temple of the All-Seeing Eye and the lingering presence of Nethys in the area, the Dragons had been very interested in the arcane arts, and thus conducted great experiments and gathered powerful artefacts in their hoards. Empowered by the riches left in the dragons' hoards, most of these over the course of a millennium grew powerful and continued with the arcane fascinations. Magical Schools and colleges were founded in these cities, all dedicated to different kinds of magic. It is from here the different spells got their classification, all based around the eight different magical schools of Sa'restece. There was a ninth city. The city of Neverfell, which through the favour of the grace of the ancient Temple of the All-Seeing Eye, managed to stave off any and all draconic tyrants.    These eight other city-states were named after the eight schools and were called:
  • Abjurion
  • Conjuraty
  • Divinor
  • Enchantia
  • Evocodon
  • Illus
  • Necromantis
  • Transmulvy
The Grand Magicus of each school, along with their Council Collegium, were also the ruler of each city-state. Although all the states always had close relations, they mostly stuck to themselves, but always had close trade with each other. Their magical might and aloofness acted as a deterrent to all neighbouring nations thinking about invading any of the city-states, as none had the military might to actually mount a successful invasion and their focus on magical advancement made them uninterested in any political conquest. Thus they instead developed their cities into magical marvels, famous for their beauty.   Peace managed to persist, until the year 2428 AM when the Grand Magicus of Necromantis, believing death magic to be the supreme arcane art, decided to take control of all the other schools. With his deadly might and growing following of fearful wizards, he managed to succeed and he managed to depose all other Grand Magici. He allowed all other schools to continue with their own type of studies but funnelled all surplus funds into his own school. In the end, fearful of death he managed to invoke the foulest form of necromancy and turned himself into a lich. This allowed him to continue his rule for centuries. Meanwhile, his mind was slowly fading and he grew paranoid and mad.   In the end a combined effort of all the Council Collegiums, the lich was deposed and destroyed, ending over a century of tyrannical rule. In its wake, the city-states decided to form a federation, which would be ruled by a council of all the Grand Magici. This would be the Arcanonic Conclave. The schools and city-states would still remain independently ruled, but they Arcanonic Conclave would be able to govern each other and ensure that no one would be able to take control of all schools again. They would ensure that all schools would work towards the same and unifying ideal of magical advancement.

Demography and Population

The people of Sa'restece are haughty people, accustomed to magic being a big part of their surroundings. This makes most Sa'restecians somewhat reluctant to spend more time than necessary in neighbouring nations. Due to the nation's neutral and protected status, it has become almost a sanctuary for more prosecuted races seeking shelter from prejudice. Sa'restece has managed to offer this due to the nations one-track focus on magical abilities and knowledge.    Many of the nations most outstanding citizens hail from far outside of Sa'restece. Since social status is closely tied to magical ability, most of the aristocracy is made up of immigrants who came to the nation to study at one of the magical schools. Rich families from all over the continent and beyond often pay hefty sums to send their children to one of the eight schools of Sa'restece, and those who manage to finish their education often go on to do great things.

Territories

The Federation of Sa'restece occupies a wide area surrounding the nine cities. Each of these have a large area around them with villages that the former city-state used to control. Another landmark that is also counted as the property of the federation is the Great Bridge of Thuul which spans all across the Stormfalls Strait. This giant landmark is an ancient construction from before the Age of Dragons, yet it has managed to stand the test of time due to the magical stonework that makes up this bridge. It is said to be almost 35 miles long and more than a third of a mile wide.

Military

Although Sa'restece has no standing military this has never been needed. The combined magical might of the eight schools has enough destructive force to decimate any army before these could ever approach any of the city-states. On top of this, all city-states have their own specialised magical contingencies should they come under threat. For matters of threats from within the federation, the Arcanonic conclave governs an order known as Soldati Prefectum, which act as the enforcers of federal law. This act on top of the provincial soldiers working under the Council Collegium of each city.    Working parallel to the Soldati Prefectum are the inquisitorial force known as the Majori Occulus Magicum, often shortened to initials in common speech. This organization also work directly under the Arcanoic Conclave and work as the conclave's eyes and hears not just in Sa'restece but all over the world. It is more often than not due to their work that the Soldati Prefectum are dispatched.

Religion

In Sa'restece the divine is not only acknowledged but frivolously studied like any other source of magic. Most of the eight schools have several faculties dedicated to this practice. The worship of gods in Sa'restece is in other ways very reserved. Most worship is dedicated to Nethys, the god of magic. His ancient temple in Neverfell is used as the meeting hall of the Arcanonic Conclave. Other gods of magic are also worshipped, like Leira, but none is as widespread as the All-Seeing Eye.

Foreign Relations

Due to their immense magical prowess and power, no nation has thus far managed to mount a successful invasion of the city-states. And since the federation of Sa'restece was formed, no one has even dared to try. Their status as the prime magical force of the continent has been enough to stave most conflict with foreign powers. Instead, it has made them an attractive trading partner and ally to most other nations, even though they have thus far not had any involvement in international conflicts since the federation was formed.    Even though their combined strength could decimate almost any army, the federation of Sa'restece holds no interest in the politics of foreign nations. They see themselves as above the petty squabbles of kings and emperors. Instead, they are solely focused on the advancement of magic, and as long as no other nation comes in the way of their work then their affiliation does not matter.

Ancient, Powerful, Eternal.
