Cand Romerrac

There are many who want the best for their people, but few do as much for them as Cand Romerrac. He alone turned the ursil from a species of raiders to a civilization rivaling, if not surpassing their former glory.

Physical Description

Body Features

Physically, Romerrac resembled a polar bear. His fur was white and his snout was long and sleek. He had quite the collection of battle scars, with the most prominent being a cut over his eye.   Like many ursil, he stood especially tall and was incredibly muscular. This sheer size made his strength plain for any to see, but he possessed a surprising agility, as well. Many opponents were overcome by an enemy far more nimble than they were expecting.

Apparel & Accessories

He was almost never seen out of his armor. He favored studded leather, particularly a set of fine, black armor. He also carried a horn on his hip, alongside a short sword kept as a sidearm. It is widely believed he never used either item.   His primary weapon was a greataxe. He wielded several of these weapons over the years, but his most famous is an enchanted weapon history names Foecleaver. This item was lost after the death of its wielder and has yet to be recovered.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Romerrac was born to the Cand family somewhere in the barrens of Voror. Life there was difficult and the ursil he grew up among were forced to live as little more than bandits. His upbringing was very harsh, as he was supposed to contribute to the gang's survival or be cast out.   Both quick and strong, Romerrac was remarkably successful. Unlike many of his fellows, he was more than a mere brute. He was a thinker and a dreamer. He had heard of the prosperity of those in places such as Labyrinthia and Hnng'yar, and he wanted that prosperity, not just for himself but for his people.   Those in his own band were more than aware of not only his competence, but his intelligence. They chose him as their leader with very little opposition. When he proposed an alliance with other nearby ursil gangs, he wasn't met with nearly the same understanding by the others.   While they doubted the worth of his ideas, they also doubted the worth of the young man, himself. He met the leaders of these bands in challenge after challenge, and each time proved himself worthy to lead their gangs in addition to his own. Before long, this granted him a sizable force.   The army he was raising started attracting the attention of his fellow ursil. Other gangs from across Hr'ask'r came to him, looking to join them. At first, these people saw him only as a strong leader, but eventually he began to be seen as the savior of ursil-kind.   With his army at his back, he needed a true home. The barrens where he lived were far from suitable for such a large force. He considered taking Labyrinthia, but he decided against it. The minotaurs were formidable warriors that had been carefully watching this army being formed on their doorstep.   Romerrac determined that not only were the people of Hnng'yar unprepared, but that Hnng'yar would be a far better home than Labyrinthia. And so he took his forces south through the jungle. The march was hard, but that was not enough to deter the ursil.   The gnolls were caught unprepared. Unfortunately, the ursil's past as raiders and bandits got the better of them. They attacked and looted various smaller towns and villages on their way to Hnng'yar. These attacks were often unnecessarily brutal and left little more than ruins in their wake.   Their actions left the Hnng'yari army more than prepared. They gathered in full and marched against their enemies long before they reached the city, itself. Disorganized and lacking magic, the ursil were defeated very handily.   Romerrac was shamed by his defeat, not just in the eyes of his fellows, but in his own. At first when others began to challenge him for leadership, he meant to step down. That was his intent until he heard that they meant to keep the war going until victory or death.   He would not stand to see his people throw their lives away for a lost cause. If they could not take a home, then they would have to build their own. He dealt with all comers, defeating them all. After proving himself still worthy of leadership, he took them north into the mountains.   As the ursil went deep into the mountains, Romerrac scouted ahead with his wife, eldest son, and several more. They discovered the ruins of a small town and did some exploring. Miraculously, some journals survived. He read every scrap, looking to learn secrets of the past.   He discovered that the town was called Rondrak, a small community of herders. He read that a great city of ursil named Dolrar had fought the mind flayers, and that they had chosen death over enslavement. He swore that he would rebuild Rondrak and recreate the memory of Dolrar of old.   As his people were rebuilding Rondrak, Romerrac was working to build the nation of Dolrar. He kept pushing into the mountains, looking for a place to settle. He was climbing a tall cliff when the rock gave way. He plummeted to his death on the rocks below.

Accomplishments & Achievements

According to legend, Romerrac was the very first to undergo the Thirteen Ordeals. Scholars are always quick to point out that the tradition didn't begin until the 3rd Age, decades after his death. The Unbroken claim the Ordeals are based on his deeds, but since they are so secretive about the nature of these trials, this cannot be verified.   His legacy overall is somewhat mixed. Many around the continent view him as a brutal and barbaric warlord. The ursil of Dolrar view him as the savior of their people and the father of their nation. It is highly in inadvisable to mention him in any other fashion to an ursil.

Morality & Philosophy

Romerrac was known to be fiercely devoted to his people. He was especially strange for his day in that he was devoted not to his band, but to the ursil as a whole. In his younger years, this even led to an arrogant disregard for those of other races.   After his defeat by the gnolls of Hnng'yar, he was greatly humbled. He began to see the self-destructive ways of he people. He sought to change their very culture, so that they would stop destroying and start building.   He wasn't the sort of leader to lead from the rear. The ursil would never respect such an individual enough to follow him, anyway. In the end, it was his desire to lead from the front that killed him. Any ursil would proudly declare that he wouldn't have it any other way.

Social

Family Ties

Romerrac's relationship with his parents was especially rocky. This, however, was not uncommon among the ursil of the day. To them, he was simply another set of hands to ensure the band's survival, nothing more, nothing less.   When he was uniting the ursil people, one of the gang leaders he displaced was a huntress named Sil Wendirit. The two had an instant attraction and engaged in a sexual relationship during the early part of the campaign of of unification.   Their marriage was practical at first, but quickly developed into true love. Unlike with most ursil, they cherished their cubs, of which they had many. They each grew up to be very influential in the new Dolrar. To this day, many proudly proclaim to be of Romerrac's bloodline.
