The Tramp Rank/Title in The True Dark Ages | World Anvil

The Tramp

The term Tramp is used by many in the Thieves of Frankia for specific reasons.

Qualifications

Has to be an expert thief, and have proven to be excellent at disguises.

Requirements

The thief must have a proven record at passing of as inconspicuous, while wear a disguise preferably one of a low class. Their track record must have been at least 5 years of not as much as 10 years before consideration.

Appointment

Only the masters of the Guild can bestow such a title, and are made this for life.

Duties

Each Tramp will have have another area of expertise too, and with their ability to be overlooked, they make excellent contacts & leaders for districts of the guild. Each will have years of experience knowing countless titbits of information, alongside all official thieves in the area, along with at least one contact in the Assassins Guild too.   They are to direct any jobs officially, and collect any money or payments, doling out wages, knowing where & when jobs are to be carried out, and who is doing what. They act as a go-between for both the masters and the general thief population, and if need be liaise with local authorities if they need a job done or called off.

Responsibilities

Each Tramp is responsible for a district and expected to know every thief, and militia member, operating in the district. They must make sure the right bribes are met, along with jobs being given & turned in, and the right money / goods flow in the right directions.   Many are expected to keep up with current affairs & information of all kinds, thus allowing for a free flow of it up and down. They have to account for any goods being supplied to individual operatives, as well as getting warnings out if there is problems with authority. They must also ensure no innocent are caught up in any bother, along with any jobs that are botched being covered up correctly.

Benefits

For a thief of this rank they are awarded great privilege alongside a pick from any moderately good hauls that pass through. They have access to the higher ups and usually have a bewildering array of characters around them that they can call on to aid themselves. A place (usually a business) is supplied as a front to them that becomes a makeshift 'fiefdom'.

Accoutrements & Equipment

Usually a fully functional thieves kit and disguise kit is held by a Tramp. Sometimes they will have a forgery kit at hand if skilled with these. They have access to all manner of magical bits & pieces handy to serve any number of functions when appropriate, alongside a hefty coin purse or two stashed away if the need arises.

Grounds for Removal/Dismissal

Sometimes a Tramp will go rogue and their name is struck off, and then dismissed in absentia. This makes them a target to all other Guild members who can treat them as an outlaw. A few are also targeted by both law enforcement and the Assassins Guild with information passing between the two, usually supplied by the Thieves guild itself.
"Aye, everybody knows Floki the Tramp, at least round this part of Parisius. Always hanging round the Slinky Seine that one. Smart little Gnome that one, and honest to the Guild & his associates. An absolute liar though to anyone whose not either though, and that's the nature of the business.   He keeps track of everything, and even the local law, from the militia right up to de Sade himself, has had to deal with him at some point. They don't believe half the stuff he tells them but still acts. Been right more than he's been wrong, and will do anything for the Guild that way. They know he can be trusted and recently got a good associate there. Someone called Fleec. Ben giving him the odd jobs, and handy for Floki to know with Fleec being Anglo-Saxon or from around there. Helps to have a few contacts for a Tramp."   Gerald de Maurier, Officer of the Thieves of Frankia.

This made me laugh out loud. The dirty tramp will make you an offer you can not refuse. Better be careful when you wake in the morning. Your prized horse may have lost its head.

Or the whole damn horse is lost.....   Was thinking that I could've tied it in with the Cenobites & Surgeons of Pain instead. If you've ever seen Hellraiser, and the tramp character in it.

It has been a while since I've seen Hellraiser. Okay, I gotta watch it again.

Big inspiration for one of my cults in the setting. Along with the nook it's based on: The Hellbound Heart.
