Lewis’s mother went into labor while visiting Okeanos Pier for the Summer Solstice Festival. Her best friend and the paramedics wanted to take her to hospital, to give birth there, but she refused. She’d come to the pier to watch the rice paper lanterns float up into the night sky from Boulder Island, where people went to celebrate the Winter Solstice Festival, since the planet’s equator was between the island and the mainland. She gave birth to Lewis right there, on the pier, as the lanterns floated from the island. The mother’s friend recorded the event and later showed the holographic recording to Lewis, who did not necessarily want to see that part of his mother.
