Personal history
Exka grew up in a Lesser Noble family that tended to become the retainers of higher ranking nobles - but Exka had no interest in doing so. Ever since seeing the Demon General Imeveo in action, Exka dreamed of becoming a soldier - against the wishes of her family.
Exka often had to sneak out of lessons on etiquette and other noble activities in order to train with whoever would teach her - which is how she ended up meeting Jurao, the nephew of a civil smith in the castle. She told Jurao about her dreams of being a solider, so he would help her sneak out because he thought she made a better soldier than attendant.
This annoyed her cousin Feyl, who was often sent to find her. Still, she didn’t hold any ill will towards her cousin - he was only looking for her because the family asked, after all.
When she became a young adult, her family agreed not to stop her from becoming an officer in the Demon King’s army. Mainly because if they did, she would become a common soldier, which was much worse.
However, Exka struggled as an officer - it turned out there was more to it than just being very good at fighting. The same political intrigue she found annoying in the court was present within the army, and it made for very dull company, in her opinion.
Her own reprieve was that her friend Jurao had also joined the army - albeit as a common soldier, but at the very least, she had someone she would talk to and train with. She’d never realized Jurao was also interested in being a soldier, but it made sense after he told Exka about his parents - both Beast Hunters. And seeing how quickly he picked up combat skills, she wasn’t surprised.
Exka was overjoyed when Jurao was promoted to the officer ranks for his performance in a mock battle between units, as it meant she could take him with her to social events and the like.
They both ended up in the “special squad” under the command of Demon General Imeveo’s daughter, Minaz. While Jurao didn’t seem to realize it was because he was seen as a “trouble officer”, Exka only cared about Imeveo saying they had “great potential”.
Exka did her very best to listen to Minaz and learn how to be a better officer, having always admired the other woman. However, Minaz’s lack of leadership skills at the time was a strain on even an admirer like Exka - who began to wonder if she’d made the right choice after all.
After a surprise attack by quad-sabered lionsnakes where Jurao took the lead, Exka and Minaz’s relationship improved significantly - Minaz became more open, listening to her squad’s concerns and figuring out better ways to help them as individuals. Exka and Minaz even became good friends, both serving as Commanders directly under Jurao when he became Demon General.
When Jurao Ascended to Demon King, taking Minaz as his Right Hand, Exka was promoted up to Demon General.
