Session III: The Worldshade Caverns Report
General Summary
Returning from the caves, the party are ambushed in the mountains. Three bandits attack and subdue Demeter, holding her at knifepoint, while Arthur ignores their warning and cuts one of them down. In the panic, a firebolt is thrown and the blade held to Demeter's throat slits it open, killing her in seconds. There is a moment of horror as a corpse slumps to the floor, before the bandits attempt to run, never having intended to kill anyone. Arthur cuts down one, however the other escapes into the forest. Shortly after, a scream is heard in the distance before silence settles on the scene again.
Gek kneels over Demeter's body as a spectral hand reaches out from over his shoulder. The tongue nailed to the front of Gek's tome turns to ash and falls away. The hand, outstretched above Demeter, rips the tongue from her throat and replaces it upon the book. Demeter immediately falls limp and begins to turn grey, before her skin cracks and withers to ash, blowing away in the faint wind. All that is left behind is an intact left hand and left eye.
Gek takes her remains and places them in a pouch, hoping to bring them to her daughter, Niamh. They make their way back to Rootsreach, with heavy hearts, where they purchase some supplies and leave again, for the Threshold. Encountering some Blights on the path and running into a Will'O'Wisp and a pair of Pixies twice, the pair eventually arrived at the threshold.
They meet Asterius, a huge Minotaur protecting the shrine, and a young Wood Elf, Niamh, who closely resembles Demeter. Niamh is distraught to hear news of her mother's demise and, after the initial shock subsides, she breaks into tears. Asterius welcomes the party to offer a prayer for the deceased Paladin and, as they kneel, the Beast Lord accepts them into his domain. Asterius comments that Arthur is no less a beast than the bear who's claws he wears around his neck and calls him kin, personally welcoming him into the forest. He mentions that Gek carries the stench of Rakdos with him but he has been cleansed of much of it, recently. The Beast Lord shall allow his presence here, too. Asterius then grants Gek a talisman, the symbol of the Beast Lord, to carry with him and wear proudly as proof of his deeds.
