Arthur Clarke is a mercenary. A troubled youth and a call to adventure led him to sign on with a small, but reputable Sellsword Company.
When war broke out on the Skeggar Isles, they were quickly hired by the Ralken League, a confederation of rich and powerful merchant cities on the northern arm of East Isle. Despite some initial success they soon ran into difficulty, poorly supplied and isolated in marshland. Their captain made a gamble, a forced march across bogland and rocky hills to rendezvous with allies went disastrousy wrong. Unbeknownst to them the allied held-fort had already fallen and they had lest themselves terribly exposed to an ambush.
They were cut to pieces, a company of 300-400 reduced to maybe a score fleeing men, most of them injured. Arthur's hand was particularly badly hurt. After four desperate days of flight, where twenty survivors dwindled to barely five, they arrived at a fortified stronghold, and a military hospital that could treat him.
A talented military surgeon, Daniel Prince, was able to help reattach ligaments in his wrist and helped him for several months as he recovered and regained the use of his hand fully. During this time, they became friends, sharing a cynical and rather pessimistic outlook. Daniel also helped him to begin to process the grief of losing his friends and adopted family.
It took him nearly four months to recover from his injuries, by the time he was ready for military service, the rest of the survivors of the company, none of whom he was particularly close to, had drifted off to whatever other employment they could find. He eventually stopped moping and started to look for employment himself.
He found it acting as bodyguard for a wealthy gnommish aristocrat. Cousin to one of the wealthier merchant-princes, he was one of the earliest to abandon ship.
