The Devastation of Comata

They say this wasteland was once a verdant forest, stretching from sea to sea. That once, the trees crowded the slopes of the Barren Mountains , and rivers flowed through peaceful villages and prosperous cities. If it did, it don't matter much now. Now, what matters is whether you have water enough to make the crossing. It was certainly a different place, once - the ruined buildings one can find in the wasteland are a testament to that. But if we want to survive it now, we need to focus on what it is, not what it was.

Summary

The northernmost tip of Hellonde is covered by a massive desert, stretching a thousand miles across from the Cliffs of Praece towering over the eastern sea, to the beaches of the Sinefin Ocean . Near the center of the blasted waste, there lies the Devastation of Comata. There are many stories about the place, with almost no agreement among them - they don't even all agree as to who or what Comata was. But the most prevalent stories say that Comata was either a city, or a prominent wizard that lived there. As wizards are wont to do, he started to interfere with powers that he didn't truly understand. It seems that someone else - I've heard adventurer, priest, and king, as the possible someones - had come upon a cursed artifact of great power. Comata (for we'll assign the name to him) was called upon to help break the curse. Comata was not the most powerful, but he did have a vast sum of knowledge, and access to much more. He knew of an object, the Orb of Grounding , that could drain the power from the cursed object, rendering it harmless. He also knew where one was, and decided to take the cursed artifact to it. Comata was smart, yes - possibly the smartest, most knowledgeable wizard of his time. But he was not wise, and he did not foresee the consequences of his actions. The orb was in use, diverting energy. When the artifact touched the orb, it did drain the magic, but it could not contain it. When the Orb burst, the Devastation was born.
