Krugerburg

Demographics

Permanent residents of Krugerburg are all Stone Goliaths and part of the Kruger Clan. Others may visit, and some professional Slam Ball players end up staying for years, but unless they are adopted into the clan, they are not considered permanent residents.

Government

The leader of the Kruger Clan runs Krugerburg as they see fit. This is currently the clan matriarch, Hilde Kruger. Hilde Kruger is a powerful divine caster who is responsible for bringing members of the clan back from the dead, and as such is given complete deference from everyone in the clan.

Defences

The town relies on the strength of its residents for protection. They have no defendable walls, no siege engines, no moats, mottes, or baileys. What they do have is over 1500 goliaths armed and eager for battle at a moments notice, and a cave for the children to retreat to.

Infrastructure

Krugerburg relies on the existence of Slam Ball and the Slam Ball arena is the largest building in the area. It can, and regularly does. hold every member of the clan as spectators. This still leaves room for fans of visiting competitors to be seated as well. Beyond Slam Ball, the Kruger Clan are best known as stone masons, although this has become much less important to the clan in recent years. The roads in town are all paved with large stone slabs, carved into intricate patterns designed to help water flow away from the surface and allow for relief during extreme temperature swings. Buildings in town are made of stone as well and hold up quite well to the elements. Most buildings are close to as old as the town and require little maintenance. Huts for processing hunted animals are common, with one hut for every four residential dwellings. These huts are placed in clusters of buildings, and intended to be used communally by those in the clusters. Krugerburg also has a decent system of hidden sewers and waste disposal. The early Kruger masons carved tunnels in the stone of the hills and diverted some nearby rivers to flow through the tunnels. Each processing hut has a direct entrance to the sewers for disposal of offal, and many of the residences have indoor toilets that open directly to the tunnels as well.

Assets

The treasury at Krugerburg is full and would be the envy of many a city a hundred times the size. Much of this came from the early members of the clan who focused on exploring the surrounding lands, who would bring back piles of ancient treasures and add them to the clan coffers. As the town shifted from those first members to a more settled town, the masons grew the treasury by traveling to cities in Sulae and plying their trade. Most recently, the treasury has been grown by the influx of money from the Slam Ball league. As the center of the sport, they have many people traveling to town to participate or watch, and under Hilde's leadership, they have been able to extract far more from these visitors than it costs to run the town. (It is rumored that the town has rigged certain matches by having members of the clan throw games while the clan bets against them.)

Besides the various treasures in the vaults, Krugerburg has its most closely guarded asset, rumored to be the true reason that they can remain as prosperous as they are - The Deck of Manly Things.

Geography

Krugerburg is in a hilly region, and most of its area is atop Kruger Hill. It is at the southern edge of the Forêt Delégion and thus has ample forested lands for hunting in the vicinity.

Climate

The area has a temperate climate, with average highs ranging from the 20s in winter to 90s in the summer, and lows averaging around 20 degrees below that. It receives between 35 and 60 inches of precipitation annually, with most of it coming in the form of rains in the late summer.

Natural Resources

Some limited woodcutting is done in the nearby forests, but that is done mostly by outsiders leasing the rights from the clan. There are quarries of several sorts, with granite, marble, and limestone in abundance and significant deposits of quartz, gypsum, sandstone, chalk, and clay. Only the marble and granite quarries are currently active - the others are not played out, but the locals do not use the stone in the same quantities as before and stopped the quarrying. The deer, elk, and moose of the forest are a significant resource used by the town. They provide most of the food for the clan, as well as most of the clothing.
