Ioya

Ioya (pronounced like the phrase "I owe ya") is the largest of the three continents of the planet Ahno in Mirrorspace and is traditionally depicted on maps as the easternmost continent.

Geography

The northern and southern ends of Ioya contain tundra which give way to decidious forests. Much of the center of the continent is dominated by the massive Expanse, a vast and harsh desert divided in half by the Sanguine river, around which a tropical seasonal forest grows. In fact, most of the continent is dominated by tropical seasonal forests, though the eastern coast is nearly entirely rainforest and wetland.   Between the eastern rainforests and the western desert lie the Unyielding Stone, a massive mountain range where few live. Yet the great glaciers that stand atop the range feed the eastern forests while their position simultaneously deprives the west of water.   The northern savannahs and grasslands of Ioya are far less populated that its warmer south. Souther Ioya also contains the Iteshire Lake, a massive freshwater lake with a shoreline over one thousand miles long and depths surpassing 400 ft. deep.

Fauna & Flora

Ioya is home to a variety of native species and animals, each suited to the climate it evolved in. From the massive sand beetles used as mounts in the Expanse to the myriad of small and large mammals and reptiles that call Ioya's jungles their home, the continent is teeming in biodiversity.   There are also a myriad of intelligent species that call Ioya home. However, while small communities of halflings, giants, centuars, tieflings, and other species can be found throughout the world, Ioya is predominately influenced by five.   The most populous of these species are humans, who can trace their origin on Ahno to the shores of the Iteshire Lake. Dominating southern Ioya, the majority of humans are Dail, a term that is at once an ethnicity, a language, and a religion which have historically and culturally connected the various human settlements of the south. Despite having no notable presence on the western continents of Ahno, Dailism has more followers than any other religion on the planet.   There is a seperate ethnicity of humans in the northeast of Ioya, Dulandrians, which are predominately nomadic and removed from their southern cousins in language, culture and religion, choosing instead to follow the Witnesses of Gurdenel, a religion that was born among the savannahs the Dulandir call home.   In the mountains of the Unyielding Stone, Gemheart Dwarves claim the southern portions, extending into the southern reaches of the Expanse, while kobolds roost in the north.   In the lush jungles of the east, yuan-ti have forged a thriving society, intermixing their settlements with the natural landscape in stark contrast to their Dialic southern neighbors.   Finally, in the north and northwest, orcs, referred to onworld as Uruks, have dominated for centuries. Once united under the singular Khuzd Empire, orcish hegemony as been slowly worn away by time. Though Khuzd is still the suzerain of the Duchy of Geg and the Principality of Brog, the autonomy of both stands in stark contrast to the singular supremacy of decades past. Recent losses to the Dalic Kingdom of Deadcrest have also chipped away at the borders of the Khzudi.
