Haruman's Hill

Haruman's Hill is a large cliff overlooking the River Styx in Avernus was famous for the rows upon rows of crucified Hellrider souls snaking its way up to its top. The hill was controlled and named for Haruman, a narzugon in Zariel's service, and the Hellrider souls were those that had abandoned Zariel and Haruman in life during the Charge of the Hellriders.   Though Haruman's infernal form was killed in 1498 during the Battle of Elturel, the hill still bears his name.

Localized Phenomena

It is impossible to travel to Haruman's Hill and not hear the endless moans of the damned Hellriders worm their way into one's mind. For mortal travelers of Avernus, the effects of that much anguish is said to have caused mental breakdowns and a burning anxiety to flee that only abated when the hill was far behind them. This effect continues to this day, though the souls of the damned are long gone.

History

Following Zariel's fall in 920, and Haruman's willing fall alongside her, Haruman was tasked with ensuring that the Hellriders that fled the field during the Charge of the Hellriders be punished for their cowardice. Haruman took this task with great zeal, choosing the site of Haruman's Hill for its proximity to where the Charge of the Hellriders took place.   When the soul of one of the cowardly Hellriders passed into Hell, Haruman claimed that soul and crucified it alongside the others he collected, making a statement to any and all that would cross Zariel. Doing so also slowly drove Haruman into more and more of an eternal fighteous anger that would not be satiated.   The final soul to be staked on Haruman's Hill was that of Jander Sunstar, the elven vampire that led the retreating Hellriders. He died centuries after the other souls had already been claimed, and Haruman placed Jander at the very top of the hill, where he was regularly tortured for Haruman's unending desire for vengeance.   Following Haruman's final death and Zariel's redemption during the Battle of Elturel, the hill now goes unclaimed, and the souls of the fallen Hellriders mysteriously disappeared as Elturel returned to the Material Plane. Despite this, their moans of pain and punishment linger on and can be heard by those that travel over the hill.
